Mozambique at a Glance

Mozambique runs for more than 1,500 miles along Africa’s south-east coast, a long ribbon of Indian Ocean shoreline wedged between South Africa and the open sea. Five centuries of Portuguese contact have left their mark on the mainland: cathedrals and praças sit at the heart of Maputo, pastel de nata surfaces in corner bakeries, and the country’s rhythms, marrabenta especially, carry a distinct lusophone swing you won’t find elsewhere in the region. Inland from the shoreline you’re into wetlands, mangroves and the coastal bush of the Maputo Special Reserve, where elephants have been quietly returning to a shore they once shared with humpback whales and dhow fishermen.

Most tours to Mozambique on our calendar reach the country overland from the south, which is how our Southern African circuit is built. The Kosi Bay border crossing lets Mozambique unfold slowly and on its own terms, rather than arriving fly-in to an all-inclusive resort.
