Overview

An introduction to Kenya

Kenya holidays with Undiscovered Destinations travel beyond the well-worn safari circuit into a country of remarkable contrasts — volcanic peaks, the Chalbi Desert, soda lakes alive with flamingos, and the wind-swept northern frontier where the Samburu, Gabbra, El Molo and Rendille still live by very old rules. Sibiloi National Park, Lake Turkana and the Rift Valley lakes each offer something genuinely apart from the mainstream.

Our small group Kenya tours follow a route few operators attempt, heading deep into the country's least-visited north before winding south through the Rift Valley lakes of Baringo, Bogoria, Nakuru and Naivasha. Whether you choose a scheduled Kenya tour package or a tailor-made Kenya trip built around the northern tribes and landscapes, every itinerary is designed to go further and stay longer in the places that matter.

Kenya Beyond the Safari Circuit

Most Kenya holidays never leave the Masai Mara and Amboseli loop. Our Kenya tours head north instead — into Samburu, Sibiloi, the Chalbi Desert and the shores of Lake Turkana, where genuine wilderness still exists and the tribal cultures of the Samburu, Rendille and El Molo are very much alive.

01

Extraordinary Wildlife Diversity

Northern Kenya supports species found nowhere else on the standard circuit — Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra and the rare desert-adapted wildlife of Sibiloi. Add rhinos at Nakuru, flamingos at Bogoria and hippos on Naivasha, and Kenya's full wildlife range becomes clear.

Living Tribal Cultures of the North

Few destinations in East Africa offer this depth of cultural encounter. The Samburu, Gabbra, Rendille and El Molo communities of northern Kenya maintain ways of life shaped by the desert — meeting them on a Kenya trip feels less like a scheduled stop and more like a genuine privilege.

Small Groups, Guaranteed Departures

Our Kenya tour packages run with a maximum of 12 people and all departures are guaranteed. That means you'll book with confidence and travel in a group small enough to go where larger operators simply cannot.

Highlights

The highlights of Kenya

Game Drives in Samburu

Spot Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, elephants and cheetahs in one of Kenya's most striking wildlife reserves — a dry-country landscape that sets it apart from every other Kenyan park.

The Jade Waters of Lake Turkana

Africa's largest desert lake shimmers with an otherworldly jade hue. Ancient tribes, Nile crocodiles and volcanic shorelines make this one of Kenya's most dramatic and least-visited destinations.

Sibiloi National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the shores of Lake Turkana, Sibiloi is famed for its fossil finds and desert-adapted wildlife. Very few visitors ever reach it — those who do rarely forget it.

Meeting the El Molo Tribe

The El Molo are the smallest tribe in Kenya, living on the shores of Lake Turkana in ways that have changed little over centuries. A visit here is one of the most genuinely rare cultural encounters on any Kenya holiday.

Flamingos at Lake Bogoria

The hot springs and alkaline shores of Lake Bogoria attract thousands of flamingos along with a rich variety of other birdlife — a spectacular sight on the journey south through the Rift Valley.

Rhino Tracking at Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya's best places to encounter both black and white rhino, alongside lions and a bird-rich lakeshore that rewards wildlife lovers at every turn.

Boating on Lake Naivasha

A boat cruise on Lake Naivasha brings travellers close to hippos, fish eagles and abundant waterbirds — a peaceful and memorable finale to a Kenya tour that has covered extraordinary ground.

Kenya rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our Kenya tours depart in September and February - both excellent windows for the regions we visit. September falls in the dry season, when northern Kenya's landscapes are at their most accessible, dust haze settles over the Chalbi Desert, and wildlife concentrates around permanent water in Samburu and Sibiloi. February sits between the short and long rains, offering warm and generally dry conditions well suited to exploring the Rift Valley lakes and the far north.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
