Overview

An introduction to Indonesia

Indonesia tours take you across one of the world's most extraordinary archipelagos — from the UNESCO temples of Yogyakarta and the volcanic crater of Mount Bromo on Java, to the carved houses and hanging cliff graves of Tanah Toraja deep in Sulawesi. These are two very different islands, and our Indonesia holidays are built around experiencing both at a pace that makes them make sense.

Our small group Indonesia tour packages travel with a dedicated English-speaking tour leader in groups of no more than 12. One itinerary crosses Java entirely by train from Jakarta to Bali, stopping at Prambanan, Borobudur and Kawah Ijen along the way. The other heads into Sulawesi — Makassar, the Tanah Toraja highlands, Lake Tempe and the wildlife reserves of Tangkoko. Whether you're drawn to rail travel, culture or wildlife, our Indonesia travel packages are built around what the country actually is, not just its most famous coastline.

A place apart

Two Islands, Two Completely Different Worlds

Java and Sulawesi sit in the same archipelago but feel like separate countries. Our Indonesia tours are built to show both — the temple complexes and volcanic landscapes of Java on one itinerary, the tribal culture and wildlife reserves of Sulawesi on the other.

01

Flight-Free Across Java by Train

The Jakarta to Bali journey is one of the few Indonesia travel packages built entirely around the country's scenic rail network, travelling first class through Yogyakarta, past Borobudur and on to the volcanic east. It's a slower, richer crossing — and one of the most memorable ways to arrive in Bali.

Tanah Toraja — Culture Found Nowhere Else

Sulawesi's Tanah Toraja region has no equivalent in Southeast Asia. The carved traditional houses, hanging cliff graves and living ceremonial culture here are not performed for visitors — they are simply how life is lived, and how the dead are honoured.

Small Groups With Real Access

A maximum of 12 travellers per departure means our Indonesia trips move at a pace that allows genuine encounters — in Torajan villages, Javanese temples and Sulawesi wildlife reserves that larger group tours simply cannot reach in the same way.

Highlights

The highlights of Indonesia

Sunrise at Mount Bromo

Rise before dawn for the jeep ride and climb to the crater rim of Mount Bromo, where sunrise breaks over a volcanic ash plain surrounded by peaks — one of the most dramatic mornings in any Indonesia tour itinerary.

Java by First-Class Train

Travel flight-free across Java from Jakarta towards Bali, passing rice terraces, jungle valleys and viaducts on a comfortable first-class rail journey through the cultural heart of the island.

Prambanan and Yogyakarta

Explore Yogyakarta, Java's cultural capital, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prambanan — a 9th-century Hindu temple complex that ranks among Southeast Asia's most impressive ancient monuments.

Borobudur Temple

Visit the extraordinary 8th-century Buddhist temple of Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose mandala form, 2,600 relief panels and 500 Buddha statues make it one of the greatest religious monuments in Asia.

Hanging Graves of Tanah Toraja

In the highlands of Sulawesi, Tanah Toraja is a world of elaborately carved traditional houses, cliff-face burial sites and ceremonies that remain central to community life — unlike anything found elsewhere in Indonesia.

Wildlife of Tangkoko Reserve

Search the Tangkoko Batuangas Reserve in northern Sulawesi for the tiny tarsier and the endangered black crested macaque — two of Indonesia's most distinctive and rarely seen species.

Kawah Ijen Crater

Trek to the active crater of Kawah Ijen in East Java, where sulphur vents and one of the world's most acidic crater lakes create a landscape that is genuinely unlike anything else on an Indonesia trip.

Birdlife on Lake Tempe

Drift across Lake Tempe on Sulawesi by traditional motorised canoe, through a wetland rich in birdlife and home to fishing communities whose way of life has barely changed for generations.

Indonesia repays the traveller who ignores the obvious — the real country starts where the tour buses stop.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Our Indonesia tours depart in May, July and September. May and September are ideal for the Jakarta to Bali rail journey — the dry season across Java brings lower humidity, clear conditions on Mount Bromo and comfortable temperatures for exploring Yogyakarta and Prambanan on foot. July is the recommended window for the Sulawesi Explorer, when highland roads in Tanah Toraja are accessible and the Tangkoko reserve is at its most active for wildlife sightings. Indonesia's climate varies considerably between islands, so if you'd like to travel at a different time of year, contact us and we can advise on a tailor-made Indonesia holiday to suit.

Both guides were excellent. I must acknowledge Andre in South Sulwesi who simply seemed to know what we wanted and adjusted the tour as needed to get the best experiences for us. He was also involved with us throughout and took meals with us and went out of his way to ensure all went fantastically. Egi, in North Sulawesi was also excellent but a little more distant during meal times. However, he did get a few minor glitches sorted very efficiently and again helped adjust things to get as many experiences for us. He was very personable and clearly enthusiastic about his country. Both spoke good English and I would be delighted to meet up with either again.

Our guide in South Sulawesi was well-organized, and everything run very smoothly. Good choice of accommodation everywhere. Especially Tangkoko Sanctuary was great with beautiful rooms and amazing food (and even some friendly dogs). Both drivers did a very good job. I felt very safe all the time. And both vehicles were good!

Very fascinating and impacting trip. Sulawesi is amazing. The Tanah Toraja area is like no other place, traditions/rituals I had never seen before. A learning experience. The itinerary was great. Jo Jo, tour leader for the Southern part of the island, was very good. We stopped frequently and sampled different foods, fruits, sweets. Also had plenty of stops for photos and to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Northern part of the island has amazing wildlife. Hornbills, macaques, bears, tarsiers… beautiful. Hotels were good. Transport acceptable, not a lot of room but we managed well.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
