Overview

An introduction to Congo (DRC)

Congo DRC tours take you somewhere that very few travellers ever reach. The Democratic Republic of Congo is shaped by its river — a vast, equatorial waterway that cuts through the world's second-largest rainforest, connecting river towns like Mbandaka, Lisala, Bumba, and Kisangani in a chain of communities that still trade by boat, just as they always have. This is Africa entirely on its own terms.

Our small group Congo DRC tours follow the river's course through two distinct legs, allowing you to travel one section or take on the full 1,000-kilometre expedition from Mbandaka to Kisangani. Whether you join us for a Congo DRC trip of 16, 17, or 29 days, every journey begins and ends in Kinshasa - giving you time to experience the capital's energy and visit the remarkable Lola Ya Bonobo sanctuary on its outskirts.

What makes Congo (DRC) worth the journey

A place apart

One of Earth's Last Frontiers

The Democratic Republic of Congo receives a fraction of the visitors that travel to comparable African destinations. The river towns, the rainforest, and the communities along the way remain genuinely undiscovered — this is rare territory for any traveller.

01

A River Journey Unlike Any Other

The Congo River is not a backdrop - it is the entire journey. Life along its banks is intimate, unfiltered, and completely unlike anything you will encounter elsewhere in Africa. Travelling by traditional wooden boat is the only real way to experience it.

Exceptional Cultural Depth

With culture and history scores of 5/5 on our tour ratings, Congo DRC holidays deliver encounters that go far beyond the surface. From riverside communities with centuries of trading heritage to the extraordinary Wagenia fisheries at Kisangani, every stop carries meaning.

Bonobo Conservation at Lola Ya Bonobo

No other Congo DRC tour packages include time at Lola Ya Bonobo as standard. The sanctuary outside Kinshasa is one of the most compelling wildlife experiences in central Africa - and a reminder of why the Congo Basin matters to the entire planet.

Highlights

The highlights of Congo (DRC)

Expedition on the Congo River

Navigate one of the world's most powerful waterways aboard a traditional 18-metre wooden river cruiser, camping on the banks each night and watching daily life unfold at the water's edge.

Remote River Towns

Pass through Mbandaka, Lisala, and Bumba — river ports that see a handful of foreign visitors each year, where trade still happens by boat and the pace of life is entirely its own.

Yangambi Biosphere Reserve

Travel past Yangambi, a protected biosphere within the Congo Basin rainforest hosting an extraordinary diversity of tree species, river hogs, monkeys, and forest wildlife.

Wagenia Fisheries, Kisangani

Explore the remarkable Wagenia fishing structures built directly into the rapids of the Congo River near Kisangani — an ingenious system passed down through generations of local fishermen.

Tshopo River Falls

Visit the Tshopo River Falls on the edge of Kisangani, where the river drops through a series of cascades surrounded by dense vegetation in one of central Africa's least-visited cities.

Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary

Spend time at the Lola Ya Bonobo project outside Kinshasa, the world's only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos — an intimate and genuinely moving encounter with one of our closest living relatives.

Kinshasa City Exploration

Begin and end your Congo DRC trip in the sprawling, energetic capital — a city of extraordinary contrasts where guided tours reveal its history, markets, and river-facing neighbourhoods.

Riverside Camping in the Wild

Sleep on the banks of the Congo River, far from roads and infrastructure, under skies unmarked by light pollution — an experience that defines what it means to travel somewhere truly undiscovered.

Congo (DRC) rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our Congo DRC tours depart in July and August - the height of the dry season in the equatorial belt, when rainfall is at its lowest and river travel is most reliable. Temperatures along the Congo River are warm throughout, typically between 24°C and 30°C, with high humidity year-round. Dry season travel means more settled conditions on the water and clearer visibility in the surrounding rainforest. If July or August doesn't suit your schedule, contact us to discuss tailor-made Congo DRC travel packages at alternative times of year.

Looking to travel outside the typical windows? Our Congo (DRC) tailor-made team can advise on the best time for you.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

I liked out boat. I liked camping. I had a great time and I think the crew worked hard all the time and were attentive to our needs. Could the boat been a fancier boat? Sure. But I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much.

Spending a couple of weeks on the Congo River was an amazing experience that has stayed with me for a long time after. Visiting places where few tourists ever come, meeting the local people, getting the feel of the river, experiencing a very different culture, helpful and enjoyable crew, and a very experienced tour leader - it all made it more than worthwhile.

Your partner did an admirable job in a very challenging environment. Accommodation was perfectly adequate or better. A lifelong memory. The transport was the destination. Your warnings & disclaimers helped to ground expectations. Delivered professionally. Without UD I would never have attempted such a trip so thank you!

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

I really appreciated Jason's help in answering all of my many questions re: Senegal trip in December 2025. I have a physical disability and I had a lot of accessibility questions for Jason! He was a true professional and was very supportive, warm and friendly and helped me a lot in making my decision to go ahead with the Senegal trip. I would like to thank Jason particularly for this service. I truly appreciate it and I am very thankful.

Foreign Office travel advice

We monitor FCDO travel advice regularly and will inform clients of any relevant changes before departure. At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against travel to parts of eastern DRC; however, these areas are not included in our tours. Our routes operate along the Congo River between Kinshasa, Mbandaka, Lisala, Bumba and Kisangani. British travellers should check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for the Democratic Republic of the Congo before departure, while nationals of other countries should consult the travel advice issued by their own government.
