Overview

An introduction to Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a land where mountains dominate—over 90% of the country rises above 1,500 meters, with the fabled “Celestial Mountains” (Tien Shan) creating landscapes that rival Switzerland’s beauty. Visitors come to breathe pristine air, marvel at lush highlands and inaccessible peaks, and experience where Silk Road wealth brought diverse cultures together.

Today, Kyrgyzstan offers a hospitable glimpse into nomadic life and epochs where dynasties flourished in fabulous isolation. From the legendary Pamir Highway traversing the “roof of the world” to Issyk-Kul, Central Asia’s largest lake, the country captivates with dramatic landscapes, traditional cultures maintained in remote villages, and warm hospitality of communities hidden from the modern world.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

The ideal time to visit Kyrgyzstan is during the summer months, from June to September. This is when the mountain passes are clear of snow, making the high-altitude pastures (jailoos) accessible for visiting nomadic shepherds. Spring (May to early June) is beautiful as the valleys begin to bloom, though some higher routes may still be blocked. Autumn (September to October) offers pleasant temperatures in the cities and golden landscapes, while winter is bitterly cold and primarily suited for those interested in winter sports or eagle hunting traditions.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Generally the standard was better than i expected. The trip was not strenuous but it felt quite adventurous. A lot of time was spent travelling in cars, so it was important that the transport was good (it was) and that the driving felt comfortable and safe (it was). Our drivers and guides were excellent. They had to manage long driving days on difficult roads. I was impressed with their skill and stamina.

Great having 3 in a vehicle, good vehicles and plenty of space. The driving skills were excellent considering the challenge of the territory.

Impressed, professional set up, drivers/guides did everything possible to keep everyone happy. Food was as good as was possible at each stop. Big variation in accommodation quality. Always kept us supplied with water. Cave petroglyphs were a waste of time, long since removed.

The tour leader, Olaf Stals, did a sterling job. Charming, accessible, enthusiastic and a good communicator. Olaf has an in-depth knowledge of the mechanics of seamless travelling and managed the group very effectively. The tour was challenging but very good organisation and professional tour leadership made it a success.

When asked by other travellers why I book with Undiscovered Destinations, it's because of the chance to visit places few, if any, other tour operators go to.

Given the countries involved, I thought the accommodation was better than I expected. Our guide was knowledgeable. He was kind and provided snacks and stories to while away the very long driving days.
