Overview

An introduction to Lithuania

Lithuania is a compact Baltic country of baroque old towns, haunting medieval castles, and an extraordinary coastline where vast sand dunes roll into the Baltic Sea. Vilnius, one of Europe's most intact baroque capitals, anchors the country's south, while the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit, the Hill of Crosses pilgrimage site and the island fortress of Trakai Castle draw visitors across the country's full breadth. It rewards travellers who take time to go beyond the capital.

Our small group Lithuania tours explore the country as part of a wider Baltic journey, travelling overland with a local guide and no more than twelve fellow travellers. The Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania – Baltic Explorer is our most comprehensive Lithuania trip, weaving together all three Baltic states across fourteen days, while the London to Gdansk Rail & Sea Adventure arrives in Vilnius via Stockholm, Tallinn and Riga for those who prefer a flight-free Lithuania travel package.

Why visit

What makes Lithuania worth the journey

Lithuania landscape
A place apart

Unspoiled and uncrowded

Lithuania sees a fraction of the tourist numbers that reach its Central European neighbours, meaning that Vilnius Old Town, the Hill of Crosses and the Curonian Spit remain genuinely unhurried destinations where local life continues at its own pace.

01

Extraordinary variety in a small country

From a UNESCO baroque capital to a UNESCO coastal wilderness, from a medieval island castle to a forest pilgrimage site, Lithuania packages extraordinary variety into a country you can cross in a few hours.

Estonia-2
02

A natural fit with Latvia and Estonia

Lithuania's history and geography make it a natural pairing with its Baltic neighbours. Most of our guests experience all three countries on a single Lithuania tour package, making the most of the overland connections between Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn.

Flight-free options available

The London to Gdansk Rail & Sea Adventure reaches Vilnius without a single flight, travelling by Eurostar, overnight sleeper and Tallink ferry for travellers seeking a more sustainable Lithuania trip.

Highlights

The highlights of Lithuania

Vilnius Old Town

One of Europe's finest baroque city centres, Vilnius Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of cathedral squares, cobbled laneways, university courtyards and a skyline of church towers.

Trakai Castle

A fairy-tale 15th-century red-brick castle set on an island in Lake Galvė, reached by wooden footbridges and surrounded by water on all sides. Trakai is one of the most photographed places to visit in Lithuania and a short, scenic drive from Vilnius.

The Curonian Spit

A 98km sand-dune peninsula shared between Lithuania and Russia and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural landscape. The spit's villages, forests and the great Parnida Dune make it one of the most distinctive destinations on any Lithuania tour.

Hill of Crosses

One of the most powerful pilgrimage sites in the Baltic states, the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai bears over 100,000 crosses left by generations of Lithuanian Christians.

Nida and the Thomas Mann House

The main village on the Lithuanian side of the Curonian Spit, Nida is a quiet, colourful settlement of traditional wooden architecture.

Palanga and the Amber Museum

Lithuania's main coastal resort town sits just north of Klaipėda and is home to the Amber Museum, housed in a 19th-century manor set in a botanic park. Palanga is a relaxed stop between the Curonian Spit and the wider Baltic itinerary.

Lithuania rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Lithuania enjoys four distinct seasons. Spring brings mild temperatures and blossom across Vilnius and the countryside, while summer (June–August) offers warm weather, long daylight hours and ideal conditions for exploring the Curonian Spit, Palanga and Vilnius Old Town. Autumn adds colourful foliage and cooler temperatures, making sightseeing particularly enjoyable, while winter brings snow, festive markets and a charming atmosphere in the cities.

Our Lithuania tours operate from late May through July, when weather conditions are at their best. Both the Baltic Explorer and London to Gdansk Rail & Sea Adventure take advantage of the long days and pleasant temperatures that make Lithuania's coast and historic towns especially rewarding to visit.

London to the Baltics by rail and sea. A very different holiday, lot of effort put in, before and during. Great not to fly, and to use a small company. Well done and thank you.

A great itinerary with lots of free time to do your own explorations Fantastic itinerary exploring very interesting cities with some time in the country side. The guides were all very good. Kristiina (Estonia) and Margita (Latvia) were exceptional. Their enthusiasm were contagious. Accommodation was of a very standard standard.

This is the 3rd time I've travelled with U.D. and , as before, I had a very pleasant time. We were able to do virtually everything we wanted to do and the guides were helpful and enthusiastic. As I said though, I found the Lithuanian guides' English especially a bit limited. But I must emphasise that this was not a huge impediment. |The only other adverse comment I would make is that I felt you could have perhaps let us know how many travellers were in the group. While it wouldn't make any difference to the quality of the holiday it would have been nice to know!

Although the trip was amazing, perhaps have longer stays and shorter journey. It was very tiring. Our guide, Olaf was brilliant. He couldn't have done more to make our holiday better. He is a remarkable young man. You are very lucky to have him on your team.

We really enjoyed our rail adventure to the Baltic States. Olaf is a first class tour leader. He is unflappable, resourceful and friendly in equal measure. He was always available if anyone in the group needed him and his creation of a shared Whatsapp group was an inspired way of giving us important information.

Because it was an amazing holiday and so interesting with all the history, much of which I didn't know. It was very humbling as well, when we in the west were having an easy time and the Baltic States were going through such hardship. The guides were excellent and the balance of sightseeing to relaxation was just right. It worked well to start in the North in Helsinki and work our way south, seeing the differences between the countries and the similarities. They all certainly knew what they were talking about. There was also lots to do after the official sight seeing.|The only thing we would have liked to have done was have another sauna. We booked one in Helsinki and that was the only one we had. We never found out about booking one in Riga or Vilnius ~ it would have been nice to have a list of places to try.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

Didn’t find your perfect Lithuania trip?

We’ll build one around you.

Lithuania's geography lends itself beautifully to a private itinerary. The country is small enough to cover thoroughly in a week yet varied enough - baroque Vilnius, the eerie Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, the island castle at Trakai, the coast at Palanga and the protected dunes of the Curonian Spit - that a tailor-made Lithuania holiday can be shaped entirely around your priorities. A private traveller might spend more time on the Curonian Spit than a group tour allows, add a cooking experience in Vilnius, or combine Lithuania with Latvia and Estonia at their own pace.

Undiscovered Destinations can build a private Lithuania travel package around you, with private transport, local guides throughout and hand-picked accommodation. Speak to the team to start planning.
