Overview

An introduction to Macedonia

North Macedonia is one of Europe's most quietly rewarding destinations — a small Balkan nation where Ottoman bazaars, medieval monasteries and mountain national parks exist almost entirely free of mass tourism. At its heart lies UNESCO-listed Ohrid, a lakeside town of ancient churches and clear waters that sits beside what is thought to be one of the oldest lakes in the world. The capital Skopje blends a lively Ottoman quarter with the dramatic Kale Fortress, Roman amphitheatres and the broad Vardar River cutting through its centre.

Our small group Macedonia tours explore this overlooked corner of the Balkans as part of a 16-day journey through Albania and Kosovo — three countries that together offer some of Europe's most genuine and historically rich travel experiences. Groups travel with a maximum of twelve people, accompanied by an experienced English-speaking tour leader throughout.

Why visit

What makes Macedonia worth the journey

A place apart

Genuinely Off the Tourist Trail

North Macedonia receives a fraction of the visitors of neighbouring Greece or Croatia. Its most celebrated sites — Ohrid, Skopje's bazaar, Mavrovo — remain unhurried, authentic and entirely free of the crowds that define mass-tourism Europe.

01

Extraordinary Historical Depth

Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Yugoslav layers all coexist in a single small country. A morning in Skopje alone spans a Roman fortress, a 15th-century Turkish bathhouse and a pedestrian bridge that has stood since the Ottoman era.

02

One of Europe's Ancient Natural Wonders

Lake Ohrid is believed to be between two and five million years old — one of the oldest lakes on earth and home to endemic species found nowhere else. Its clarity and the frescoed churches along its shores make it unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Combined Balkan Journey

Macedonia tours pair naturally with Albania and Kosovo to form one of the continent's most rewarding itineraries: three deeply different countries, united by warmth, history and a complete absence of tourist fatigue.

Highlights

The highlights of Macedonia

Skopje's Old Ottoman Bazaar

The largest and most colourful oriental bazaar district remaining in Europe, its narrow lanes packed with artisan workshops, traditional cafés and centuries-old architecture that survived Skopje's devastating 1963 earthquake.

UNESCO-Listed Ohrid

A lakeside town of extraordinary character, with the 11th-century Church of St Sofia, a Roman amphitheatre and a waterfront of frescoed Orthodox churches set against one of Europe's deepest and most ancient lakes.

Mavrovo National Park

North Macedonia's largest national park, covering 73,000 hectares of mountain landscape. The route follows the Radika River through a valley of monasteries, traditional villages and dramatic highland scenery.

Kale Fortress, Skopje

An ancient citadel with origins in Illyrian and Roman times, rising above Skopje's old town and offering sweeping views over the city and the Vardar valley below.

Church of Sveti Spas, Skopje

A beautifully preserved Ottoman-era Orthodox church, built low to the ground as no Christian building was permitted to stand higher than a mosque — a fascinating relic of the city's layered religious history.

Gadime Cave

A remarkable natural formation discovered in 1966, its 440-metre walkway revealing crystallised stalagmites and stalactites formed over millennia beneath the Kosovo–Macedonia borderlands.

Macedonia rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

North Macedonia has a continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold winters, moderated by Mediterranean influences in the south. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures, green landscapes and wildflowers, while summer (June–August) is hot and sunny, particularly around Skopje and Lake Ohrid. Autumn (September–October) offers cooler weather, colourful scenery and fewer crowds, making it one of the most enjoyable times to visit. Winter brings colder temperatures and snowfall in the higher mountain regions.

Our small-group North Macedonia tours depart in April, May, September and October, taking advantage of the pleasant weather and excellent conditions found during the spring and autumn seasons.

Both our leader Ardi and the driver Ardian were superb. Although Ardian the driver spoke little English, he was always helpful and friendly, and a fantastic driver. We always felt safe and secure. Ardi our leader was simply wonderful - so knowledgeable about every aspect of Albania, about which he is passionate. He looked after us so well and had a good sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble and he was aware of the individual interests within the group. I recommend him for a pay rise!

Our guide Ardi was absolutely wonderful. He was extremely knowledgeable about the countries and sites we visited. He was extremely accommodating taking us places we wanted to go after the scheduled activities were over (e.g. the Prizren fortress).

Ardi was a great guide and very knowledgeable. we thoroughly enjoyed his company, his knowledge, his enthusiasm and his stories. Perhaps on the more domestic side he was a little weaker but overall a great guy.

We had a fantastic group of people who watched out for each and were considerate . This is what made the trip . I had booked an overnight hotel at Heathrow and two Americans hadn't .By then the choices were limited so I had them in my room . Three "" strangers "" in one large bed . That is how well we got on! |What I would suggest as very practical improvements is on the first day in Tirana we are taken to a mobile provider to get Sims for at least Albania but hopefully also the other countries . I had two cellphones and on both of them the European roaming package didn't work |Secondly , advice and help on changing money - about how much and the warning that these currencies are hard to change back.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
