Overview

An introduction to Oman

Oman stands apart from its Gulf neighbours as a country that chose to preserve rather than reinvent itself. An ancient trading nation shaped by frankincense, maritime heritage and tribal culture, it offers dramatic contrasts within a single journey — red desert dunes, terraced mountain villages, turquoise wadis and a coastline where green turtles still nest on protected beaches. The pace is unhurried, the people genuinely welcoming, and the landscapes feel earned rather than packaged.

Our small group Oman tours and holidays take you beyond the obvious, travelling with no more than 12 people through places that reward curiosity. Whether you're watching sea turtles emerge at Ras Al Jinz, spending a night with Bedouins in the Wahiba Sands or wandering the souqs of Nizwa, each Oman trip is guided by experts who know the country deeply and travel it respectfully.

What makes Oman worth the journey

Authentic Arabia Without the Crowds

Oman has resisted the ultra-development that defines much of the Gulf, preserving traditional culture, ancient forts and local markets that still serve their communities. Oman tours here feel genuinely exploratory — you are a traveller, not a tourist product.

01

Extraordinary Landscape Variety

Few countries in the region pack such diversity into a single trip. Desert, mountain, wadi, coast and ancient city are all within reach on a single Oman tour package, making every day feel meaningfully different.

Small Group Travel Done Properly

A maximum group size of 12 means flexibility, access and the kind of encounters — a Bedouin family invitation, a chat in a village souq — that larger tours simply cannot offer.

Highlights

The highlights of Oman

Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

One of the most remarkable wildlife encounters in the Arabian Peninsula. Green sea turtles return to this protected stretch of coast to nest, and night visits to the beach offer an extraordinary chance to watch them emerge from the surf.

Wahiba Sands Desert Camp

The vast dunes of the Wahiba Sands (also known as the Sharqiya Sands) rise and fall in waves of red and white sand. Travelling into the desert with experienced drivers, staying overnight in a Bedouin camp and sharing a meal under an open sky is a defining moment of any Oman travel package.

Nizwa Fort and Souq

Nizwa was once the capital of Oman and remains the heart of the country's interior. The 17th-century fort dominates the old town, while the souq below fills with silverware, pottery and the scent of frankincense.

Jebel Akhdar Mountain Villages

The Green Mountain rises into cool air above the Hajar range, its terraced slopes planted with roses, pomegranates and apricots. Villages here cling to dramatic ridgelines, and the drive through Wadi Habib and its ancient plantations gives a side of Oman few Oman holiday packages reach.

Jebel Shams Grand Canyon

Oman's answer to the Grand Canyon is a sweeping escarpment of sheer rock walls and plunging gorges. The views from the rim are among the most dramatic in the Middle East, and the abandoned mudbrick village of Wadi Ghul sits below — a ghost town frozen in time.

Salalah and the Lost City of Ubar

The southern city of Salalah sits in the lush Dhofar region, a world away from the desert north. On our extended Oman Encompassed tour, you visit the ancient ruins at Sumhuram, the frankincense groves near Al-Mughsail Beach and the legendary Lost City of Ubar — one of Arabia's greatest archaeological mysteries.

Oman rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

The best time to visit Oman is between October and April, when temperatures are comfortable — from mid‑20s to low 30s — and evenings in the mountains like Jebel Akhdar can be cool. Summer (June to September) brings extreme heat above 40°C across most of the country, except Salalah in the south, which has its monsoon season (khareef) with mist and unexpected greenery. Winter rains are possible in the far north, and mountain nights can be surprisingly chilly — pack a jacket even on warmer trips.

Our Oman tours and holidays depart from October through to April, covering the optimal travelling window. Specific departure months include October, November, December, January, February, March and April — check individual tour pages for exact dates.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

Didn’t find your perfect Oman trip?

We’ll build one around you.

Oman lends itself particularly well to a private, tailor-made itinerary. The country's geography — desert in the west, mountains through the centre, a long coastline to the east and the lush Dhofar south — means the order and pace of a journey can be shaped entirely around your interests. A private traveller might choose to spend longer in the Wahiba Sands, push further south to Salalah and the frankincense groves, or take time in Nizwa's weekly cattle and silver markets that a scheduled group tour must pass through. The mountain roads of Jebel Akhdar and Wadi Bani Awf reward unhurried exploration on your own timeline.

Undiscovered Destinations can arrange private transport, specialist local guides and a range of accommodation from desert camps to boutique mountain lodges. Speak to our team to start planning your private Oman holiday.
