About this journey

What to expect on this trip

This women-only cultural journey through northern Algeria and the historic M’zab Valley offers a rare opportunity to explore one of North Africa’s most intriguing and least-visited destinations in the company of a local English-speaking female guide. Travelling from the Mediterranean capital of Algiers to the dramatic bridges of Constantine and the Saharan architecture of Ghardaïa, the itinerary reveals a rich tapestry of Roman heritage, Ottoman history, Berber traditions, and living desert culture. Encounters with traditional crafts, historic neighbourhoods, and authentic domestic settings provide meaningful insight into everyday Algerian life beyond the usual tourist routes.

A special focus on women’s cultural traditions shapes the experience throughout the journey. From wearing the elegant El Haïk and preparing beloved local dishes in Algiers to relaxing in a traditional hammam and sharing moments of hospitality in a Moorish home, travellers gain a deeper understanding of the social spaces and customs that have long been central to women’s lives in Algeria. Combined with dramatic landscapes, UNESCO-listed sites , and the preserved communities of the M’zab Valley, this thoughtfully paced itinerary offers an enriching and supportive environment for culturally curious women travellers seeking authentic connection and discovery.

  1. The UNESCO-Listed Casbah of Algier

Wander the historic streets of Algiers' UNESCO-listed Casbah, where Berber, Arabic and French heritage converge. Don traditional El Haik dress, prepare Mhadjeb street food and take part in a pottery workshop before viewing La Grande Poste, one of Algiers' most celebrated architectural landmarks.

  2. Yemma Gouraya National Park, Bejaia

Ascend into Yemma Gouraya National Park above the coastal city of Bejaia, climbing 123 steps to the Pic des Singes viewpoint for panoramic views across the Mediterranean and out to Cap Carbon. Forested hillsides and the dramatic coastline form the backdrop throughout.

  3. Djemila Roman Archaeological Site

Explore Djemila, a UNESCO-listed Roman site set in the eastern highlands of Algeria. The on-site museum houses over 1,000 square metres of mosaics - Algeria's finest collection - displayed alongside extensive ruins that reveal the scale of the ancient settlement.

  4. Constantine & the Rhumel Gorge

Perched above the dramatic Rhumel Gorge, Constantine is explored through the Cirta Archaeological Museum, the Great Mosque, the Palace of Ahmed Bey and the iconic Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge. An evening dinner features traditional Malouf music, reflecting the city's Andalusian heritage.

  5. Ghardaia & the M'zab Valley

Set 600 kilometres south near the edge of the Sahara, the UNESCO-listed M'zab Valley centres on Ghardaia and its surrounding Mozabite settlements. The day takes in El Atteuf - the valley's oldest settlement with its ancient mosque - a vibrant traditional carpet market and the cobbled streets of Beni Isguen, where a historic auction market remains in active use.

  6. Moorish House & Hammam, Algiers

Visit a traditional Moorish-style house in Algiers over coffee and local sweets, experiencing the refined domestic culture of the city. The day closes with a traditional hammam - an important North African ritual of relaxation, massage and social connection.

Pick up and transfer all handled very efficiently. It was a very good trip, superb itinerary, lots to see, very friendly people and so much history. I stayed on in Algiers for 2 extra nights and had a great time exploring using the metro.

This trip gave me a better understanding of the extent of the Roman Empire, and of other empires that have passed through over the years. An excellent tour of the biggest country in Africa and full of contrasts.

Rochdi was calm and patient. He had identified varied and interesting places to stop on our drives, he made sure that we had regular stops, we were taken to great places to eat and he was extremely knowledgeable about both modern Algerian history and its fascinating past. It was a fascinating trip to an “undiscovered destination!” It is not for everyone but if you enjoy history, modern and ancient, exploring varied places from cities to deserts and all in the company of like-minded people, it is a real treat.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
