Overview

An introduction to Romania

Romania is one of Europe's most quietly rewarding destinations — a country in south-eastern Europe where medieval towns, fortified Saxon villages and wild Carpathian forests have been left largely untouched by mass tourism. From the painted monasteries of Bucovina to the wildlife-rich channels of the Danube Delta, it offers a rare combination of deep cultural heritage and extraordinary natural landscapes that few corners of the continent can match.

Our small group Romania tours are built around real access rather than a highlights reel. Capped at twelve travellers, each departure is led by a dedicated English-speaking guide and paced for depth — with nights spent as guests of local families in Saxon villages, bear watching in the Carpathian forests near Brasov, and full days navigating the Danube Delta by boat. Romania travel packages with us range from a focused fortnight in Transylvania and Bucovina to a 25-day journey that pairs Romania with Bulgaria for a broader Balkan experience.

Europe's Most Intact Rural Traditions

Romania is one of the few European countries where horse-drawn carts still work the fields, village craftspeople practise centuries-old trades, and local families welcome guests into their homes. The traditions visible in Viscri, Tarpesti and the villages of Bucovina feel entirely genuine — not preserved for tourism.

01

Wildlife That Has Vanished Elsewhere

The Carpathian Mountains hold some of Europe's largest remaining populations of brown bears, wolves and lynx. The Danube Delta shelters extraordinary birdlife across its reed beds and channels. Romania offers wildlife encounters that Western Europe lost long ago.

UNESCO Heritage at Every Turn

From the painted monasteries of Bucovina to the fortified Saxon villages of Transylvania and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, Romania has an extraordinary density of UNESCO-listed sites — without the crowds that follow them in more-visited European destinations.

Small Group Access to a Lesser-Visited Country

Romania remains well off the mainstream European tour circuit. Our small group Romania holidays — capped at twelve — allow genuine access to rural communities, local guides and landscapes that larger operators cannot reach.

Highlights

The highlights of Romania

Bear Watching in the Carpathians

Search for European brown bears in their natural forest habitat near Brasov, accompanied by local wildlife experts from the National Forestry Administration. The Carpathian Mountains are home to one of Europe's largest brown bear populations, and sightings in the forest observatories are genuinely remarkable.

Painted Monasteries of Bucovina

The UNESCO World Heritage monasteries of Bucovina rank among Europe's most extraordinary religious art sites. Sucevita, Moldovita and Voronet — known as the Sistine Chapel of the East — are covered in vivid 15th and 16th-century exterior frescoes that have survived centuries of weather in astonishing condition.

Saxon Village Life in Viscri

Viscri is one of Romania's best-preserved Saxon villages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, centred on a fortified church that has stood since the 13th century. Time here includes a horse-drawn carriage ride through the countryside and a genuine encounter with village life that has changed little in generations.

The Danube Delta

Europe's largest river delta is one of the continent's last great wildernesses — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of winding channels, reed beds and remote fishing villages. Our Romania trips spend two full days here exploring by small boat from a base in the isolated settlement of Crisan, with the Letea forest among the highlights.

Medieval Sighisoara

Sighisoara's fortified old town is among the best-preserved medieval citadels in Eastern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 13th-century clock tower, cobbled lanes and colourful guild houses — including the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler — make it the most atmospheric stop in Transylvania.

Alba Iulia Citadel

The Vauban-style star fortress at Alba Iulia is the finest of its kind in Europe, designed by an Italian architect in the early 18th century and built across seven star-shaped bastions with remarkable baroque gateways. The citadel is also home to 300-year-old wine cellars where guests on our rail tour enjoy a tasting.

Turda Salt Mine

Once a working salt mine dating from the 17th century, Turda is now one of the most dramatic underground spaces in the world — a vast cavern transformed into an entertainment and leisure space with a boat lake, Ferris wheel and sports facilities all within the ancient salt chambers.

Bucharest's Belle Époque Quarter

Romania's capital rewards those who look beyond its communist-era architecture. The historic quarter — founded as a citadel by Vlad Tepes — contains 16th-century churches, neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings, lively markets and excellent museums that earned Bucharest its old nickname of 'Little Paris'.

Romania rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Romania has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (April to June) is mild and green, with wildflower meadows in the Carpathians and manageable crowds at the painted monasteries and Saxon villages. Summer (July to August) brings warm temperatures and long days, but can be busy at popular sites such as Bran Castle and Sighisoara. Autumn (September to October) is widely considered the finest season — the Carpathian forests turn amber and gold, the Danube Delta is still warm enough for boat exploration, and rural life continues at its most vivid. Winters are cold and snowy, particularly in the mountains, making travel more challenging. Our Romania tour packages depart in May and September to make the most of the best conditions.

Our guide, Andrei was exceptional. His knowledge of history, politics, architecture and linguistics was impressive. He was always cheerful and made a huge effort to ensure that we were well looked after and happy with everything. We particularly enjoyed the home stay accommodation which could not have been more welcoming or delightful. We were very lucky to be in a group of only 3 so travelled by car with our guide. Andrei was an excellent driver and the car was very comfortable. This was our first trip with Undiscovered Destinations and we were very impressed. You have some very interesting itineraries so we hope we will travel with you again and we will certainly be recommending Romania to our friends. We chose this trip because the itinerary included all the places in Romania that we wanted to see, and it more than lived up to expectations. Our guide was really excellent- exceptionally knowledgeable, helpful and good company, and we learned a great deal about the country and the culture. The home-stays were particularly enjoyable and welcoming, but all the accommodation was clean and comfortable and of a good standard. We loved Romania and will have wonderful memories.

Raluca was outstanding throughout the tour. The hotels surpassed our expectations. They were all in excellent central locations, which is important to us, and this made walking out to restaurants in the evenings very easy. The homestays were characterful, with excellent food, a genuine welcome, and perfectly acceptable facilities.

I really enjoyed our guide, Bogdan. He is a very personable and knowledgeable. If we asked questions he couldn't answer he tried to find out. He had a very good sense of humour which made for a fun time. He was always checking in on the group making sure we were good with everything.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
