Overview

An introduction to Brazil

Brazil is a country of extraordinary natural contrasts — a vast South American giant stretching from Atlantic coastline to remote interior wetlands, with ecosystems that rank among the richest on earth. While most travellers think immediately of the Amazon, it is the Pantanal — the world's largest tropical wetland — that offers the most accessible and rewarding wildlife encounters on the continent. Open floodplains, winding river channels and seasonally flooded grasslands create viewing conditions simply impossible in dense rainforest canopy.

Our small group Brazil tours focus on the northern Pantanal, exploring this remarkable wilderness by foot, canoe, jeep and expedition boat. With a maximum of 10 travellers per departure, these are intimate Brazil travel packages built for people who want genuine encounters — not coach-window glimpses. Departures run from June through October, the dry season months when wildlife concentrates around the waterways and jaguar sightings are at their most reliable.

What makes Brazil worth the journey

A place apart

The World's Finest Jaguar Destination

The Pantanal offers a higher probability of jaguar sightings than any other location on earth. Dry season conditions concentrate both prey and predator along the riverways, giving small group visitors an extraordinary chance of close, prolonged encounters with the Americas' largest feline.

01

Wildlife Viewing Without the Crowds

Unlike the Amazon, the Pantanal's open terrain means wildlife is visible rather than hidden. The northern Pantanal remains genuinely off the mainstream tourist trail — our Brazil tours operate with a maximum of 10 travellers, keeping experiences intimate and unhurried.

Two Environments, One Journey

The tour divides between a land-based eco-lodge with walks, canoeing and horseback riding, and a floating expedition boat giving deep river access. Both habitats are distinct — and both deliver outstanding wildlife encounters across a single Brazil holiday.

June to October — Peak Wildlife Season

Brazil's Pantanal dry season (roughly June through October) is when water levels fall, wildlife congregates and the Pantanal is at its most spectacular. All Undiscovered Destinations departures are timed to coincide with these peak months for the best possible sightings.

The highlights of Brazil

Jaguar Safaris on the Cuiabá River

The Pantanal is one of the best places in the world to see wild jaguar. Aboard a comfortable expedition boat, we navigate the Cuiabá, Piquiri and Três Irmãos rivers during the dry season months when these powerful predators hunt along the banks — both on land and in the water.

Pousada do Rio Mutum

The first half of the tour is based at this eco-friendly riverside lodge, where guided walks, canoeing on the Mutum River, horseback riding and jeep safaris reveal the Pantanal's extraordinary birdlife, reptiles and mammals in varied habitats across the private lodge grounds.

Hyacinth Macaw Encounters

The Pantanal holds one of the world's most significant populations of the hyacinth macaw — the largest parrot on earth and one of Brazil's most iconic species. Sightings are a near-daily occurrence from the lodges and trails of the northern Pantanal.

Giant River Otters and Caiman

The waterways of the Pantanal support thriving populations of giant river otters and broad-snouted caiman. Boat excursions along the rivers and smaller creeks bring you close to both, along with capybaras, tapirs and a spectacular array of wading birds.

Ninhal Porto da Fazenda

En route between the two lodge bases, a photo stop at this extraordinary nesting colony reveals over 1,000 birds from multiple species — great white egrets, jabiru storks, American wood storks and cocoi herons — all in one unforgettable scene.

Expedition Boat Exploration

The second stage of the tour uses a comfortable expedition boat as a floating base for four nights deep in the Pantanal. Morning and afternoon excursions cover the key jaguar zones, while evenings bring spotlighting sessions in search of nocturnal species along the riverbanks.

Brazil rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

The Pantanal has two distinct seasons. The wet season (November–March) brings flooding, high humidity, and challenging travel conditions, with wildlife spread across the floodplain. The dry season (April–October) offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around shrinking waterways. June to August brings cooler temperatures and excellent visibility, while September and October are hotter but remain dry. Piranha fishing on the Mutum River is available from February to September and is suspended from October to January during the breeding season.

Our small group Brazil tours depart in June, August, September and October — all within the heart of the dry season — giving you the best conditions for jaguar sightings, birdwatching and Pantanal exploration.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

Didn’t find your perfect Brazil trip?

We’ll build one around you.

Brazil is exceptionally well suited to a tailor-made approach. The country is vast, and the Pantanal alone offers a range of private lodge experiences, itinerary lengths and activity combinations that a fixed group tour cannot cover. A private traveller might spend longer at the Pousada do Rio Mutum focusing on birdwatching and canoeing, extend into the Cuiabá River zone for additional jaguar days, or combine a Pantanal journey with an extension to the Amazonas region, Iguazu Falls or Rio de Janeiro — all practical and rewarding options.

Undiscovered Destinations can build a private Brazil itinerary around your pace, interests and travel dates, with private transport, expert local guides and a hand-picked choice of lodges throughout. Speak to our team to start planning your Brazil travel package.
