Overview

An introduction to Cameroon

Cameroon tours reveal a country that rewards those willing to travel beyond the obvious. Between the Congo Basin and the Atlantic Ocean, equatorial rainforest stretches across valleys alive with rare primates, while the Grasslands are home to ancient chieftaincies whose palaces, customs and ceremonies have endured for centuries. The 80-metre Ekom Waterfalls, the Dja Reserve, and the coastal stretch near Kribi give Cameroon a natural variety that few destinations in Africa can match.

Our small group Cameroon tours are built around genuine immersion - time with the Ba'Aka people in the Dja Reserve, exploring the royal palaces and artisan workshops of Foumban, cruising the Nyong River by pirogue and spending time at primate sanctuaries where rescued chimpanzees and gorillas are rehabilitated. With a maximum of 12 travellers, these Cameroon travel packages are designed to keep encounters authentic and personal rather than rushed.

What makes Cameroon worth the journey

A place apart

Africa's Most Undervisited Country

Cameroon receives a fraction of the visitors of its neighbours, which means travel here still feels genuinely off the beaten track. You'll explore ancient kingdoms, rainforest reserves and coastal villages with almost no other tourists around.

01

A Living Culture of Ancient Kingdoms

The Grasslands chieftaincies — including the Bamoun Kingdom of Foumban — are among the best-preserved traditional royal cultures in sub-Saharan Africa. Palaces, ceremonies and craft traditions remain active and welcoming to visitors who take the time to engage properly.

02

Extraordinary Natural Diversity

From equatorial rainforest and volcanic highlands to palm-fringed beaches and river systems rich in wildlife, Cameroon packs more landscape variety into one country than most destinations manage across an entire region.

03

Genuine Community Encounters

Time with the Ba'Aka people in the Dja Reserve offers a rare window into a forest lifestyle little changed over millennia. These aren't staged encounters - they're the result of long-standing relationships built through respectful, small-group travel.

Highlights

The highlights of Cameroon

The Ekom Waterfalls

One of Cameroon's most spectacular natural sites — an 80-metre cascade set deep in rainforest near the Manengouba Mountains, best reached through lush plantations and volcanic landscapes.

Ba'Aka People of the Dja Reserve

Spend immersive time with the Ba'Aka in one of Africa's largest intact rainforest reserves, learning traditional forest skills, tracking techniques and local folklore passed down through generations.

Royal Palaces of Foumban

Explore the cultural heart of the Bamoun Kingdom — its ornate royal palace, museums and busy artisan workshops reveal a living tradition of craft and history unique to Cameroon's Grasslands.

Nyong River by Pirogue

Glide through the rainforest canopy on a traditional pirogue along the Nyong River — a peaceful, immersive way to experience Cameroon's waterways and the forest ecosystem that surrounds them.

Mefou Primate Sanctuary

Visit one of Central Africa's most important primate sanctuaries, home to rescued chimpanzees and gorillas rehabilitated from the illegal bushmeat and pet trades.

Lobe Waterfalls at Kribi

A rare natural phenomenon — the Lobe Falls plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean near the coastal town of Kribi, best seen from the water on a short boat ride.

Bamileke & Bororo Villages

Visit traditional communities in the Cameroon Grasslands where local life revolves around age-old customs, vibrant ceremonies and skills that have shaped the region for centuries.

Douala-Edea Wildlife Reserve

A coastal reserve near Douala where forest meets mangrove and the Atlantic, offering encounters with rare primates and a sense of wilderness within reach of Cameroon's largest city.

Cameroon rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our Cameroon tours depart in November — a strong time to travel, sitting between the heavy rains of the main wet season and the driest months of December to February. Temperatures in the lowland rainforest and along the coast are warm year-round, while the Grasslands region is cooler and more temperate. November brings fresh, green landscapes following the rains, and travel conditions across the country are generally good.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An excellent trip showcasing Cameroon’s diverse regions in a truly untouristed destination. Joseph was knowledgeable, calm and well organised. Some long drives were unavoidable. Highlights included the BaAka village, the waterfalls and seeing chimpanzees from the boat.

Joseph Nintai had excellent rapport with the local people. Unreservedly give the highest marks to Joseph Nintai and those involved in arranging Kingdoms of Cameroon. Very challenging conditions but very well worth it. This Undiscovered Destinations tour was excellent value for money.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
