Overview

An introduction to China

China tours reveal a country of extraordinary contrasts — imperial walled cities alongside modern skylines, ancient Silk Road corridors cutting through remote landscapes, and cultural traditions that stretch back thousands of years. From the Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an and the karst hills of the south to the energy of Shanghai's Bund, China travel packages here are built around the journey itself as much as the destination.

Our small group China tours use the train as the primary mode of travel, connecting cities and landscapes in a way that flights simply cannot. Whether you're heading east from Istanbul across Central Asia to Shanghai, or travelling south from Shanghai through Laos to Bangkok, both China trip itineraries place the railway at the heart of the experience — with expert guides, small groups of no more than 12, and first-class travel throughout.

China by Train — the Right Way In

China's high-speed rail network is one of the finest in the world, and our China travel packages use it as the primary mode of transport. Arriving between cities by train means you see the countryside, not just the airports — and China's landscapes between its great cities are well worth seeing.

01

Depth of History Few Countries Match

From Xi'an's Terracotta Warriors and the Silk Road corridors of western China to Shanghai's colonial-era Bund, few countries layer ancient and modern history as dramatically as China does. Our China holidays are structured to give you genuine context, not just sightseeing.

A Country of Extraordinary Scale and Variety

China is not one landscape or one culture — it's dozens. The bamboo groves of Sichuan, the mineral formations of Zhangye, the Uyghur world of Urumqi, and the skylines of Shanghai occupy the same country. No other destination on earth offers this range.

Small Groups, First-Class Travel

Both our China tour packages cap groups at 12 people and travel in first-class rail comfort throughout. That combination — personal, unhurried, well supported — makes a significant difference across a journey of this scale.

Highlights

The highlights of China

The Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an

One of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries, the Terracotta Army guards the mausoleum of China's first emperor. Visiting with an expert local guide transforms it from a spectacle into a story.

Shanghai's Bund and Old Quarter

The Bund's colonial-era waterfront set against a futuristic skyline is one of the world's great urban contrasts. Yuyuan Garden and the old quarter offer a quieter, more traditional counterpoint nearby.

Giant Pandas in Chengdu

Chengdu's Panda Breeding and Research Centre is one of the leading giant panda conservation facilities in the world, set among bamboo groves — a genuinely memorable morning.

China's High-Speed Rail Network

Travelling between cities by high-speed train is one of the highlights of any China tour package — comfortable, fast, and with views of a country that unfolds in a way no airport ever shows you.

Zhangye's Rainbow Mountains

The Danxia landforms at Zhangye are among China's most spectacular natural landscapes — layered mineral deposits creating vivid bands of colour across entire hillsides.

Yunnan's Stone Forest

Near Kunming in Yunnan Province, thousands of towering karst pillars rise from the earth in formations that feel genuinely otherworldly — a striking natural landscape in China's diverse south.

Urumqi and Western China

Gateway to China's far west, Urumqi's Grand Bazaar reflects the city's Uyghur heritage — a vivid mix of culture, food, and music that feels far removed from China's eastern cities.

Silk Road History Across Borders

Both China trip itineraries trace ancient Silk Road routes — connecting Xi'an and western China to the great cities of Central Asia and beyond, with history visible at every stop.

China rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our China tours depart in March/April and November — both well-suited to the regions visited. The March/April Istanbul to Shanghai departure moves through western China as spring arrives, with mild temperatures and clear skies ideal for the Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye and the streets of Xi'an. The November departure on the Shanghai to Bangkok route catches China in its autumn season — comfortable travelling weather across Shanghai and Yunnan Province before crossing into Laos. If these departure windows don't suit your plans, contact us to discuss a tailor-made China holiday around your preferred dates.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

I really appreciated Jason's help in answering all of my many questions re: Senegal trip in December 2025. I have a physical disability and I had a lot of accessibility questions for Jason! He was a true professional and was very supportive, warm and friendly and helped me a lot in making my decision to go ahead with the Senegal trip. I would like to thank Jason particularly for this service. I truly appreciate it and I am very thankful.
