Overview

An introduction to French Guiana

French Guiana is South America's most extraordinary anomaly — a fully fledged département of France sitting deep in the Amazon basin. It is a place of remarkable contrasts: colonial streets and French cafés in Cayenne, the haunting ruins of the Devil's Island penal colony off the Atlantic coast, and one of the world's most advanced space launch facilities at the Guiana Space Centre near Kourou. The interior is dense, largely untouched Amazonian rainforest, home to Creole, Amerindian, Maroon, and Hmong communities living alongside extraordinary wildlife.

Our small group French Guiana tours weave this territory into a broader Guianas journey, combining Devil's Island and Cayenne with Suriname's Maroon river culture and Guyana's world-class wildlife lodges. These 15-day French Guiana travel packages visit three countries in one itinerary — giving you a rare and genuinely off-the-beaten-track slice of the continent. Groups are capped at 12, and both escorted and unescorted options are available.

Europe in the Amazon

No other territory on Earth offers this combination: French language, cuisine, and infrastructure set inside the Amazon rainforest. French Guiana is genuinely unlike anywhere else — an overseas département of France where croissants and cassava share the same table.

01

Iconic History

The Îles du Salut penal colony — and Devil's Island in particular — is one of South America's most compelling historical sites. Few places carry such weight of story against such a vivid natural backdrop.

Three Countries, One Journey

Our French Guiana trips combine Suriname's river culture and Maroon heritage with French Guiana's space-age and colonial contrasts and Guyana's unrivalled wildlife. Three distinct countries, three different characters — all in a single 15-day itinerary.

Exceptional Wildlife

The Guianas sit within one of the most biodiverse corridors on the planet. Giant river otters, tapirs, jaguars, caimans, giant anteaters, and hundreds of bird species are accessible across the three countries — without the crowds found elsewhere in South America.

Highlights

The highlights of French Guiana

Devil's Island

The most notorious of the Îles du Salut penal colony, Devil's Island held political prisoners including Alfred Dreyfus. Today its overgrown ruins, set against vivid green jungle and Atlantic coastline, make for one of the most atmospheric and haunting visits anywhere in South America.

Cayenne

French Guiana's small, characterful capital blends French urban life with a distinctly Caribbean and South American energy. Colonial architecture, a vibrant covered market, and excellent Creole cuisine make Cayenne a surprisingly engaging base and an ideal introduction to the territory's unique cultural mix.

Guiana Space Centre, Kourou

The European Space Agency's primary launch facility sits on the edge of the Amazon and is one of the world's leading rocket launch sites. A visit to the Ariane Space Centre offers a remarkable perspective — watching cutting-edge technology operate at the jungle's doorstep is an experience found nowhere else on Earth.

Maroon Villages, Suriname

En route through Suriname, our French Guiana tour packages include time with Maroon communities descended from formerly enslaved Africans who established free societies deep in the rainforest. A stay at Danpaati River Lodge on the Suriname River places you right at the heart of this living culture.

Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

One of the world's great waterfalls, Kaieteur drops further in a single plunge than any comparable fall on the planet — roughly five times the height of Niagara. A light aircraft flight over and down to the falls is one of the defining moments of any Guianas journey.

Iwokrama Rainforest

This protected expanse of pristine Guyanese rainforest includes a 30-metre-high canopy walkway and the chance to spot jaguars, monkeys, harpy eagles, and an extraordinary range of birdlife. Iwokrama is widely regarded as one of the best wildlife destinations in the Amazon basin.

French Guiana rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

French Guiana has a humid equatorial climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The driest and most comfortable period is generally from August to November, with warmer temperatures, lower rainfall and better conditions for exploring. A shorter dry season occurs between February and April. Rain can be heavier from May to July and December to January, particularly in remote rainforest areas. Suriname and Guyana follow similar seasonal patterns, although conditions vary locally across the region.

Our French Guiana tour packages depart in September, October, November, January, February, and April, with our escorted departure in March — covering both dry seasons and the cusp of seasonal transitions when the landscape is at its most dramatic.

Looking to travel outside the typical windows? Our French Guiana tailor-made team can advise on the best time for you.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

I really liked the lodges generally in Guyana as they were simple, authentic and comfortable. They fitted naturally into the landscape. In Karanambu for example, I enjoyed the bats which roosted in my bathroom during the day, then would go out hunting at night, and return the next morning. I hope these lodges resist over modernisation and becoming part of a big hotel chain.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

I really appreciated Jason's help in answering all of my many questions re: Senegal trip in December 2025. I have a physical disability and I had a lot of accessibility questions for Jason! He was a true professional and was very supportive, warm and friendly and helped me a lot in making my decision to go ahead with the Senegal trip. I would like to thank Jason particularly for this service. I truly appreciate it and I am very thankful.
