Nicaragua at a Glance

Nicaragua is Central America’s largest country and one of its least visited — which is exactly what makes it so rewarding. Known as the ‘Land of Lakes and Volcanoes’, it offers a striking mix of dramatic volcanic chains, fertile highlands draped in cloud forest, and two of the continent’s great lakes. The colonial cities of Granada and León are among the finest in the Americas, with beautifully restored baroque churches, cobbled lanes and a genuine historical atmosphere.

Beyond the cities, you’ll find rich coffee-growing highlands, the peaceful volcanic island of Ometepe, and laid-back Pacific coast towns like San Juan del Sur. Nicaraguans are famously warm and welcoming, and the country’s turbulent past has given way to a congenial, increasingly confident nation that rewards travellers willing to look beyond the usual Central American circuit.
