Overview

This thoughtfully designed women only journey through Bhutan offers an immersive exploration of one of the Himalaya’s most culturally preserved and spiritually rich kingdoms. Travelling with a local English speaking female guide throughout, the itinerary moves from the lively capital of Thimphu to the fertile valleys of Punakha, the sacred landscapes of Bumthang, the tranquil glacial scenery of Phobjikha, and finally the historic Paro Valley. Along the way, you will experience Bhutan’s remarkable living traditions through monastery visits, village walks, artisan encounters, and the vibrant Nalakhar Festival, where masked dances, ritual music, and community celebration reveal the depth of Bhutanese spiritual life.

At the heart of the journey is a meaningful focus on the lives, skills, and leadership of Bhutanese women. Encounters with a female homestay owner, time spent within a Buddhist nunnery, and a meeting with a local female entrepreneur provide rare insight into women’s roles within family, faith, and contemporary society. These experiences are complemented by Bhutan’s most iconic cultural moments, including a pilgrimage hike to the dramatic Tiger’s Nest Monastery and exploration of ancient dzongs and temples set within pristine Himalayan scenery. The result is a deeply personal and culturally rich journey that combines spiritual discovery, authentic human connection, and the unique perspective of travelling entirely in the company and guidance of women.

You will be met by your guide and begin the scenic drive along the Paro and Thimphu river valleys to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, at 2,320 metres. En route, stop to take in the magnificent Tamchhog Lhakhang, the hereditary place of worship associated with Thangtong Gyalpo, the revered iron bridge builder who organised the construction of Bhutan’s historic suspension bridges. Sightseeing today will depend on flight arrival time. Later, enjoy a gentle late-afternoon walk around town and soak in the atmosphere of this magical capital, with its busy shops, bazaars, and photogenic citizens dressed in national costume.

🛏️ Overnight: Pelyang Boutique, Thimphu or similar
🍽️ Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2 – Thimphu sightseeing and women’s empowerment encounters

This morning, we will try to arrange a meeting with a representative from RENEW (Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women), an organisation dedicated to ensuring a gender-based-violence-free society and safeguarding the rights of women and families. A representative such as Madam Tshering Dolkar, or one of her colleagues, will share insights into their work supporting women across Bhutan. Continue sightseeing with visits to the School of Traditional Arts, where Bhutan’s thirteen classical crafts are preserved and taught, followed by the National Library and the National Textile Museum, whose intricate woven collections reflect traditions historically maintained by Bhutanese women. You may also wish to browse the Craft Bazaar, whose stalls are run by local handicraft shops selling purely handmade Bhutanese articles with no imports. Later visit the revered Memorial Chorten and the immense Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking Thimphu Valley. The three-storey throne houses several chapels, while the statue itself contains 125,000 smaller Buddha images. On the return, visit Changangkha Temple, perched high above the town, where devotees circumambulate and turn prayer wheels throughout the day.

There may also be opportunities to try traditional sports such as archery, khuru darts, or degor. Continuing into the low-lying Punakha Valley at 1,250 metres, notice the distinct change in climate and vegetation. Stop to visit Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century Temple of Fertility built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, known as the Divine Madman, and set among terraced fields in Sopsokha village. After visiting the temple, descend to the bridge and continue by road to Nobgang Monastery, dating from the 17th century and once residence of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. From here, begin a two-hour hike descending through chir pine forest, passing farms, school buildings, and traditional houses, with striking views of Punakha Dzong and the surrounding mountains. • Day 6 – Nalakhar Festival and sacred monasteries of Bumthang

Today drive approximately 1.5 hours to Ngang Lhakhang to attend the Nalakhar Festival together with local villagers. During the festival you will witness sacred masked dances performed by figures representing animals, deities, and protective spirits, accompanied by the resonant sounds of cymbals, drums, and horns. Monks chant ritual prayers as colourful brocade costumes whirl through the air in the distinctive thunderbolt dance step. Look out for the Atsara, the traditional clown figure who entertains onlookers while also conveying spiritual symbolism. Through ritual blessing and performance, the festival invokes protective deities, increases good fortune, and dispels misfortune, creating a deeply memorable spiritual experience. On the return journey through Bumthang Valley, visit a series of revered temples including Jamba Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples; Kurjey Lhakhang, associated with Guru Rinpoche’s meditation; and Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in the 16th century and known for its ancient religious paintings.

Continue for approximately one hour to Ogyen Choling, a historic palace now preserved as a museum that provides fascinating insight into aristocratic family life in Bhutan during the last century. Subject to confirmation, there may be an opportunity to meet Ashi Kuenzang Choden, the current owner of Ogyen Choling and a prominent Bhutanese woman, who may share reflections on women’s lives, traditions, and social change within Bhutanese society. A picnic lunch will be arranged before returning toward Bumthang, stopping en route at Ta Rimochen Lhakhang, a Nyingma monastery associated with Guru Padmasambhava. Sacred rocks behind the temple are believed to bear tiger stripes and meditation footprints, and local legend links the site to hidden spiritual treasures.

Stop in Trongsa to visit Ta Dzong, the watchtower museum dedicated to the Wangchuk dynasty, displaying royal artefacts and telling the story of the valley it overlooks. Visit Gangtey Gompa, one of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries, and explore the valley where villagers continue to live a traditional rural lifestyle. Visa Information

At the time of writing British, US and Australian nationals require a visa for a tourist visit to Bhutan. US Nationals – travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html

Australian Nationals – www.smartraveller.gov.au

Other nationals should check the latest requirements with the authorities in their home country, or with the destination’s nearest embassy or consulate.

Should you require any documentation to support a visa application, such as a letter of invitation, upon request this will be provided by Undiscovered Destinations after receipt of your balance payment.

As it is the travellers’ responsibility to ensure that they meet all entry requirements it is essential that you check the rules and any other conditions at the time of booking and again when making your balance payment. In addition, we would strongly advise that you make a final check around two weeks before your arrival. This is important as requirements can change at short notice. Undiscovered Destinations, when possible, will provide guidance about entry rules, but in the first instance please contact the relevant authorities, including the applicable embassy or consulate for assistance.

Passports

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in possession of a full passport, valid for at least six months after the date of return to your country.

We strongly advise that your passport contains a minimum of two blank pages, as this may be a requirement of the local immigration authorities. Vaccinations & Protection

As with travel to most parts of Asia, we strongly recommend that you contact your doctor’s surgery or a specialist travel clinic for up-to-date information, advice, and the necessary vaccinations. For a visit of less than one month, almost certainly you will be advised to have immunisations against the following: Diphtheria and Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Meningitis. The use of a DEET-containing insect repellent is highly recommended.

Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses (including cover for Covid-19 conditions) and emergency repatriation to your home country and be valid for the entire duration of your holiday.

Local Conditions

When travelling to our destinations, many of which are underdeveloped and untouristed by mainstream tourism, a good deal of patience and a sense of humour is an important attribute. This will help you to cope with problems such as ageing or poor infrastructure and when maintenance may not be as high as we would always like.

The choice of appropriate accommodation in some towns and cities (particularly the smaller places) can be limited, and standards of both service and maintenance can be less than polished. Guides and other service providers in some of our destinations do not always have the decades of collective practice and experience that their counterparts in more developed countries can draw upon. Although we will always try and resolve any issues as quickly as possible, on occasions there may be some shortcomings which no matter how hard we try will be unavoidable.
