The tour opens in Buenos Aires before a short flight to Salta, one of Argentina's best-preserved colonial cities and the gateway to the north-west. A walking tour of Salta's Main Plaza, Cathedral, Church of San Francisco, and Convento San Bernardo introduces the region's layered Spanish colonial character, whilst the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) brings the Inca sanctuaries of the surrounding peaks into focus. Together, these two cities form a rich cultural opening before the route heads into the high Andean valleys.
From Salta, the tour heads north through the Quebrada de Humahuaca — a deep Andean gorge lined with the indigenous villages of Tilcara, Purmamarca, and Humahuaca, whose food market, red gorge hike, and Sacred Garden of Cardones at 3,200 metres anchor a day of extraordinary variety. The route then crosses the vast Salinas Grandes salt flat and the 1598 church at Susques before descending into Chile and San Pedro de Atacama. An early-morning drive reaches El Tatio — where more than 80 active geysers vent steam at 4,200 metres — and the day closes at sunset over the sculpted formations of the Cordillera de Sal, before a final excursion along ancient llama caravan routes to the flamingo-rich lagoons of Miscanti and Miniques.
Returning from Chile via the Sico Pass, the tour crosses into one of Argentina's most rarely visited landscapes: the high-altitude Puna plateau, where salt lakes, volcanic formations, and isolated communities stretch across elevations above 3,500 metres. At Tolar Grande the brilliant blue pools of Ojos del Mar shimmer in white salt crust, a hidden sand dune offers 360-degree panoramic views, and distant sightlines reach the 6,735-metre summit of Llullaillaco Volcano and the abandoned railway station at Caipe. The route continues across the Salar de Arizaro to the Antofalla Oasis, through the wildlife-rich Vega Colorada — home to llamas, vicuñas, and Andean ostriches (suris) — and on to El Peñón, from where the white pumice formations of Campo de Piedra Pómez Natural Reserve and the flamingo colonies at Laguna Carachi Pampa complete one of the most visually extraordinary stretches of the entire journey.
Descending from the Puna, the tour moves through a landscape of increasing warmth and colour. The pre-Inca ruins at Quilmes — one of northern Argentina's most significant archaeological sites — precede the vine-covered valleys of Cafayate, where a winery visit introduces the region's celebrated Torrontés white wine. The 55-kilometre Quebrada de las Conchas gorge, with its 100-million-year-old sedimentary rock formations, and the ancient quartz desert of the Quebrada de las Flechas line the return north along Ruta 40. The tour closes with a crossing through four distinct ecosystems — from Molinos and Cachi to the giant cacti of Los Cardones National Park and the descent from Piedra del Molino Pass at 3,457 metres — with condors and guanacos visible along the route back to Salta.
