Deserts, Wildlife and the Wild Landscapes of Namibia
Namibia is a land of immense skies, dramatic desert landscapes and some of Africa’s most rewarding wildlife. From the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the stark beauty of the Namib Desert to the rugged wilderness of Damaraland and the wildlife rich waterholes of Etosha National Park, its landscapes are both varied and spectacular. Along the Atlantic coast, the historic town of Swakopmund adds a different character, with its German influenced architecture and wealth of outdoor activities. With vast open spaces, excellent wildlife viewing and a wonderful sense of wilderness, Namibia is a country made for exploration.

Sweet spot: May–Oct
Namibia is a year round destination, with generally dry conditions and around 300 days of sunshine each year. The most popular time to visit is during the cooler, dry months from May to October, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and wildlife viewing is particularly rewarding as animals gather around Etosha’s waterholes. Nights can be surprisingly cold, especially in the desert.
From November to April, temperatures are higher, with January and February particularly hot in the Namib Desert. This is also the wetter season, although rainfall is generally limited and often takes the form of short, localised showers. The rains can transform parts of the landscape, bringing greener scenery and excellent birdlife.
Along the Atlantic coast, including Swakopmund, temperatures are typically cooler throughout the year due to the cold Benguela Current, with coastal fog a common feature.
