The remainder of the day is at leisure to recover from your journey and begin exploring the city independently.

Windhoek

Set at an altitude of approximately 1,650 metres, Windhoek is a surprisingly green and attractive capital surrounded by rolling hills. Its history reflects the complex mixture of African, German and South African influences that have shaped modern Namibia. The city retains numerous examples of German colonial architecture, including the distinctive Christuskirche, while more recent landmarks reflect Namibia's journey towards independence. The Namibia Craft Centre is a good introduction to the country's traditional arts and crafts, while the former township of Katutura offers an insight into the country's more recent social history. Windhoek is compact and relatively easy to explore, with a selection of restaurants, cafés, galleries and craft shops.

Your accommodation – Utopia Boutique Hotel

This morning, begin your self-drive journey south from Windhoek. The route passes through Rehoboth, historically associated with the Baster community, before continuing towards Kalkrand. Here the landscape changes as you leave the main highway and enter the edge of the Kalahari.

Although commonly described as a desert, the Kalahari is more accurately a vast semi-arid region receiving considerably more rainfall than the true deserts further west. Its characteristic red sands support grasses, shrubs and trees, creating a surprisingly rich habitat for wildlife. The Kalahari's dunes are therefore very different from the stark, towering dunes of the Namib. Their deep colours contrast beautifully with the vegetation, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon light.

Continue to your lodge and enjoy the remainder of the day surrounded by the peaceful Kalahari landscape.

Your accommodation – Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

Set among red Kalahari dunes, Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch offers a memorable introduction to Namibia's desert landscapes. Continue south towards Keetmanshoop and the extraordinary landscapes of southern Namibia.

Depending on your interests and timing, stop at the Mesosaurus Fossil Site, where ancient fossils provide a fascinating window into the prehistoric past. The fossils found here are particularly significant because the same type of Mesosaurus fossil has been discovered in both southern Africa and South America. Their distribution provides important evidence supporting the theory of continental drift. The site is also a fascinating geological landscape, where ancient rock formations reveal a history stretching back hundreds of millions of years.

Continue towards the Fish River region. Along the way, look out for the unusual quiver trees, which are actually a species of aloe rather than true trees. Their distinctive branching silhouettes have become an emblematic feature of southern Namibia.

The Fish River Canyon is one of Namibia's most spectacular natural wonders. Carved over immense periods of geological time, the canyon stretches for roughly 160 kilometres through the arid landscape, with enormous cliffs descending into the winding valley below. The scale is difficult to appreciate until you reach one of the viewpoints. In the surrounding landscape, keep an eye out for Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, klipspringer, baboons and the area's distinctive birdlife.

Your accommodation – Canyon Roadhouse

Located close to the Fish River Canyon, Canyon Roadhouse is a characterful lodge with a strong connection to Namibia's motoring and pioneering heritage. We would recommend an early start allowing you to reach the Fish River Canyon viewpoint while temperatures are cooler and the morning light illuminates the vast cliffs and valley. After enjoying the panorama, continue west towards the Atlantic coast, travelling through the rugged Aus Mountains. The region is particularly known for its population of Namib Desert wild horses, whose origins remain the subject of debate but whose ability to survive in this harsh environment is remarkable. Continue towards the isolated coastal town of Lüderitz, arriving during the afternoon.

Few towns in Namibia are as distinctive as Lüderitz. Sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, it retains a remarkable collection of German colonial architecture, much of it dating from the period when Namibia was known as German South West Africa. Colourful façades, churches and Art Nouveau buildings stand in stark contrast to the surrounding desert. The town's remote setting gives it an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Your accommodation – Lüderitz Nest Hotel

Situated on the waterfront, Lüderitz Nest Hotel provides a comfortable base from which to explore the town and surrounding coastline. Its position overlooking the Atlantic makes it particularly appropriate for this remote stage of the journey.

Today is devoted to exploring Lüderitz and its fascinating surroundings.

Depending on weather and availability, you may choose to join an optional marine cruise into Lüderitz Bay and towards Halifax Island, where African penguins and other marine wildlife may be seen. Later, explore the town independently before travelling to Diaz Point, named after the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias. The coastline provides opportunities to see seabirds, seals and dramatic Atlantic scenery.

Your principal excursion is likely to be to Kolmanskop, one of Namibia's most extraordinary historical sites.

Once a thriving diamond-mining settlement, Kolmanskop was built in the early 20th century after diamonds were discovered in the surrounding desert. As richer deposits were discovered elsewhere, the town was gradually abandoned. Today, wind-blown sand fills the interiors of its former homes, hospital, school and other buildings, creating one of the most evocative ghost towns in the world.

Return to Lüderitz after your exploration.

Today begins a spectacular change of scenery as you leave the Atlantic coast and head north into the vast landscapes of the Namib Desert. The journey follows gravel roads through an exceptionally remote part of Namibia. Rugged mountains, barren valleys and isolated settlements gradually give way to more open desert landscapes. Eventually, the distinctive red sands of the Namib begin to appear. Stretching for approximately 2,000 kilometres along the Atlantic coast, the Namib is one of the world's oldest and driest deserts. Yet despite its apparent barrenness, it supports a remarkable variety of specially adapted plants and animals. Gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and mountain zebra inhabit the wider desert environment, while numerous plants and invertebrates have evolved highly specialised ways of surviving with almost no rainfall.

Continue towards the Sesriem area and your desert accommodation.

Your accommodation – Desert Camp

Desert Camp provides a comfortable base close to the gateway to Sossusvlei. Individual units combine the atmosphere of a desert camp with private facilities and are particularly well placed for an early start into the dunes.

An early start is essential today as you enter the Namib-Naukluft National Park to experience some of Namibia's most spectacular scenery The vast dunes surrounding Sossusvlei are among Namibia's defining landscapes. Their intense orange and red colours become particularly dramatic in the soft early morning light.

Explore the area around Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, with the opportunity to walk among the dunes and experience the extraordinary contrast between the red sand, white clay pans and brilliant blue sky.

Deadvlei is one of the Namib's most surreal landscapes. Ancient camel-thorn trees stand stark and black against the pale clay pan, surrounded by enormous red dunes. The trees died centuries ago after the river that once supplied the area changed course, yet the extreme aridity has prevented them from decomposing. Continue to Dune 45, one of the most recognisable dunes in the Namib. Its graceful profile and accessibility make it a favourite viewpoint and a more manageable alternative to some of the larger dunes.

Return to the Sesriem area around midday to escape the strongest heat.

Later in the afternoon, visit Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved through the surrounding rock by the ephemeral Tsauchab River. Return to your camp for the evening.

Leave the desert behind and continue north-west towards the Atlantic coast. The landscape gradually changes as you travel through the stark desert environment towards Swakopmund. Swakopmund is one of Namibia's most distinctive towns, combining German colonial architecture with the stark landscapes of the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean. The town's streets are lined with historic buildings, cafés, restaurants, galleries and shops, making it an enjoyable place to explore on foot. The cool coastal climate also provides a welcome contrast to the heat of the desert.

Your accommodation – The Delight Hotel

The town is easily explored on foot, with museums, galleries, cafés and shops providing plenty to occupy the day. Alternatively, there are numerous optional excursions available locally. A popular choice is a marine cruise from nearby Walvis Bay, where dolphins, seals and seabirds can often be seen. More adventurous options include scenic flights over the Skeleton Coast or desert-based activities.

Continue north-east towards the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland. The scenery becomes increasingly rugged, with wide open plains, ancient valleys, volcanic formations and isolated rocky outcrops.

One of today's principal highlights is Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing one of Africa's most important concentrations of prehistoric rock engravings. The engravings depict animals, human figures and symbols created by hunter-gatherer communities thousands of years ago. Together they provide an extraordinary record of the relationship between ancient people and the landscape around them. Nearby, see the remarkable geological formation known as the Organ Pipes, where tall basalt columns rise dramatically from the earth.

Damaraland is one of Namibia's most spectacular regions, characterised by mountains, dry riverbeds, desert plains and enormous expanses of open wilderness. The region is also home to wildlife that has adapted to extremely arid conditions, including desert-adapted elephants, gemsbok, springbok and, in some areas, lion and black rhino.

Your accommodation – Twyfelfontein Adventure Camp

Set within the dramatic Damaraland landscape, Twyfelfontein Adventure Camp offers an atmospheric wilderness experience close to the region's principal attractions. Today is free to enjoy Damaraland at your own pace.

You may choose to relax at camp and appreciate the surrounding scenery or arrange an optional excursion with the lodge. One of the most rewarding options is a desert-adapted elephant drive, following the dry river systems in search of elephants that have adapted remarkably well to this arid environment.

Another possibility is a visit to the Damara Living Museum, where you can learn more about the traditional culture and heritage of the Damara people.

The remainder of the day can be spent enjoying Damaraland's extraordinary scenery.

Depart Damaraland and travel towards Etosha National Park, one of southern Africa's great wildlife destinations. Aim to arrive in time for an afternoon self-drive game drive in the park.

Etosha National Park

Etosha is centred around a vast salt pan that dominates the landscape and can be seen from space. Despite its harsh appearance, the park supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, particularly around its permanent waterholes. Elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok and gemsbok are among the species commonly encountered, while lion and leopard are also present. Etosha is particularly renowned for opportunities to see the endangered black rhinoceros. The contrast between the brilliant white salt pan, golden grasslands and scattered woodland creates an exceptionally distinctive safari landscape.

Spend the afternoon exploring the park's network of gravel roads and waterholes before heading to your accommodation.

Your accommodation – Etosha Safari Camp

Etosha Safari Camp provides a comfortable base for exploring the national park. Its location makes it convenient for accessing the park while retaining the atmosphere of a safari lodge.

Today is dedicated to wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park. The day is at leisure, allowing you to explore the park at your own pace and visit a succession of waterholes. These are natural focal points for wildlife, particularly during the drier periods, and patient observation can reward you with memorable encounters.

Keep watch for elephants, zebra, giraffe, antelope and predators, while the park's abundant birdlife adds another dimension to the experience. Later, exit the park through the eastern side towards the Namutoni area and continue to your private reserve accommodation.

Your accommodation – Onguma Bush Camp

Onguma Bush Camp is located on a private reserve bordering Etosha National Park and offers a more intimate safari atmosphere after your day exploring the national park. The setting allows guests to continue enjoying Namibia's wildlife and wilderness beyond the park itself, with comfortable accommodation and a relaxed lodge atmosphere.

After breakfast, begin your final drive back towards Windhoek. En route, stop at the Okahandja Woodcarvers Market, where local craftspeople sell traditionally carved wooden sculptures and other souvenirs.

Continue to Windhoek and return your vehicle fully fuelled before transferring to the airport for your onward flight.
