About this journey

What to expect on this trip

Romania is one of the most exciting parts of Europe, tucked away in a remote corner where few visit and fewer still have much knowledge of. Blessed with large swathes of virtually untouched countryside, much of Romania follows a way of life that has been extinguished elsewhere in Europe, and the century’s old folklore and traditions still thrive in its picturesque villages. Our tour goes right to the heart of this captivating country – rather than simply skim over its highlights we take you not only to important cultural gems such as the medieval towns of Sighisoara and Sibiu in Transylvania, but spend time getting to grips with life in the villages, often staying in rural communities as guests of local families, where local culture is at its strongest. We traverse the spectacular Carpathian Mountains, home to bears and wolves, and devote to the Danube Delta the time that it truly deserves, staying at an isolated settlement deep within its backwaters. Taking in the gorgeous painted monasteries of Bucovina and the Saxon village of Viscri, this Romania trip encompasses the very best that Romania has to offer. But Romania cannot simply be experienced by ticking off its sites – it is the genuine cultural encounters that we have with local people that make this tour so very special, and will leave you with enduring memories of this truly enchanting country.

  • Bran Castle and Brown Bear Observatory

Explore the medieval city of Brasov before visiting Bran Castle, linked to the Dracula legend. Return to a forest observatory with National Forestry Administration rangers to observe wild European Brown Bears in their natural habitat.

  • Viscri Saxon Village

Drive to the UNESCO-listed Saxon village of Viscri, stopping at the fortified church of Prejmer. Visit the village's fortified church, ride through the countryside by horse and carriage, and meet artisans specialising in traditional crafts.

  • Sighisoara Medieval Citadel and Sibiu

  • Alba Iulia Fortress and Turda Salt Mine

Visit Alba Iulia, where Romania was unified after WWI, and its Vauban-style star-shaped fortress. Continue to the 17th-century Turda salt mine, now an extraordinary underground entertainment space.

  • Painted Monasteries of Bucovina

Visit Moldovita and Voronet monasteries, with their remarkably preserved exterior frescoes of Biblical scenes painted in the 15th and 16th centuries. Stop at Marginea's black pottery workshop and the Sucevita Monastery, the largest of the painted monasteries.

Our guide, Andrei was exceptional. His knowledge of history, politics, architecture and linguistics was impressive. He was always cheerful and made a huge effort to ensure that we were well looked after and happy with everything. We particularly enjoyed the home stay accommodation which could not have been more welcoming or delightful. We were very lucky to be in a group of only 3 so travelled by car with our guide. Andrei was an excellent driver and the car was very comfortable. This was our first trip with Undiscovered Destinations and we were very impressed. You have some very interesting itineraries so we hope we will travel with you again and we will certainly be recommending Romania to our friends. We chose this trip because the itinerary included all the places in Romania that we wanted to see, and it more than lived up to expectations. Our guide was really excellent- exceptionally knowledgeable, helpful and good company, and we learned a great deal about the country and the culture. The home-stays were particularly enjoyable and welcoming, but all the accommodation was clean and comfortable and of a good standard. We loved Romania and will have wonderful memories.

Raluca was outstanding throughout the tour. The hotels surpassed our expectations. They were all in excellent central locations, which is important to us, and this made walking out to restaurants in the evenings very easy. The homestays were characterful, with excellent food, a genuine welcome, and perfectly acceptable facilities.

I really enjoyed our guide, Bogdan. He is a very personable and knowledgeable. If we asked questions he couldn't answer he tried to find out. He had a very good sense of humour which made for a fun time. He was always checking in on the group making sure we were good with everything.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.
