About this journey

What to expect on this trip

Be the centre of attention in the Comoros, a delightful set of tropical islands which define the very essence of off the beaten track — with very few other tourists. Flying between the three islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli, you visit local villages, explore the capital, relax on gorgeous beaches and, for the energetic, why not organise locally a day hike in Mohéli or Anjouan, or climb the volcano of Mt Karthala? This Comoros Islands small group tour offers an intimate way to experience the islands at a relaxed pace.

The highlights

  • Moroni's Old Quarter and Ancient Friday Mosque

Moroni is described as a delightful little town perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, its old quarter a maze of narrow streets with traditional carved doors reminiscent of Zanzibar architecture. The ancient Friday Mosque and vibrant market offer an immediate immersion into daily island life.

  • Mbeni Ylang-Ylang Distillery and Salt Lake

A full-day crossing of Grande Comore takes in the Mbeni agricultural cooperative with its ylang-ylang distillery and vanilla warehouse, where lemurs, tortoises, and coelacanth fish may be encountered. The tour then reaches the Dragon-shaped rock formation and a turquoise Salt Lake before finishing at the white-sand beaches of Galawa and Chomoni.

  • Mutsamudu Citadel and Medina, Anjouan

Anjouan is described as the most beautiful of the islands, and its charming capital Mutsamudu features a historical citadel and medina district. The island is also noted as the world's principal exporter of ylang-ylang oil, an essential ingredient in most perfumes.

  • Tatringa Waterfalls and Bambao Distillery

A guided tour of Anjouan crosses the col de Patsy pass with spectacular views before reaching the Bambao ylang-ylang distillery and the Tatringa waterfalls near a former French perfume-production building connected to Chanel No. 5. The day also includes a visit to Domoni's historical presidential mausoleum and an ocean-side picnic lunch.

  • Turtle Nesting and Marine Wildlife on Mohéli

Mohéli, the smallest and wildest of the islands and dubbed the true Pearl of the Comoros, offers evening observations of giant sea turtles nesting on Itsamia beaches. The surrounding waters are home to whales and dolphins in Le Parc Marin de Mohéli, and the island also hosts Livingstone Fruit Bats — the largest bat species in the world.

  • Rainforest Hiking and Snorkelling in Mohéli Marine Reserve

Two full leisure days on Mohéli allow for guided rainforest hiking, cycling on virtually empty roads, and snorkelling in marine reserves. The beaches of Sambadjou and Nioumachoua are ranked among the island's most beautiful.

We thought Omar was trying very hard to provide a good service in challenging circumstances. We were grateful for his advice and support.

This is truly an undiscovered destination! Not many people know that much. Everything ran well despite the difficulties of lack of infrastructure.

Omar, our primary guide based in Grande Comore went over and above at all times to make sure that we had the best possible time, despite the significant disruptions and problems that we faced throughout the trip.

The 2 guides on Anjouan - Patrice and Patrice - were absolutely lovely, full of energy and friendly and trying to give us a good time. Overall I found the trip very interesting and thought-provoking, and the itinerary provides great variety with the 3 very different islands.

Jason was very helpful and the booking process was quick and easy. UD offers itineraries that many competitors do not. I thoroughly enjoyed both trips I've taken with them. While they may not suit everyone, I have happily recommended the Senegal tour to fellow travellers.

Common questions

Things travellers usually ask

  • How many travellers will be in my group?

  • How fit do I need to be?

Fitness requirements vary by itinerary, from gentle to demanding. The day-by-day tour dossier sets out walking distances, terrain and any altitude so you know what to expect. If you have specific concerns, speak to our team before booking — they can talk you through a typical day.

  • When are the next departures?

The next available departures are 12 October 2026; 17 May 2027; 11 October 2027. See the "Choose your departure" table further up the page for the full schedule and per-departure pricing.
