What to do

Key experiences at Valle de la Luna

  • Cordillera del Sal, San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta Region, Chile

    Watch the sunset at Vallecito

The valley is at its most extraordinary in the hour before dark. We specifically visit Vallecito in the Cordillera de Sal (Salt Mountains Range) to experience the glowing sunset, where the low angle of the sun draws vivid colour from the surreal rock formations.

  • sculpted salt and clay formations

Walk among sculpted salt and clay formations

The valley floor is a geological open-air exhibition. Salt crusts fracture underfoot, smooth clay basins give way to jagged mineral outcrops, and wind-carved arches frame views across the desert. No two sections of the valley look the same.

  • scale of the Atacama

Experience the silence and scale of the Atacama

Valle de la Luna sits in one of the most remote desert environments on Earth. Away from the formations, the surrounding landscape opens into wide, empty plains backed by Andean peaks. The scale and quiet of the place are as much a part of the experience as the scenery itself.

  • Geyser del Tatio

Combine with Geysers and an Afternoon Rest

On our tours, the valley visit follows a very early departure to Geyser del Tatio. Importantly, you will return to San Pedro de Atacama for some rest before heading out again in the afternoon, allowing you to comfortably experience both early-morning geysers and late-afternoon sunsets in a single day.

About this place

The story behind Valle de la Luna

Valle de la Luna

Valle de la Luna sits within the Cordillera de Sal, the Salt Mountain Range, just outside the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. The name translates as Valley of the Moon, and the terrain earns it: ridged salt formations, wind-eroded clay, and sand dunes combine to produce a landscape that feels unlike anywhere else on Earth.

The Cordillera de Sal

Walking through the valley, travellers move between jagged salt crusts, smooth sandy floors, and craggy outcrops. The landscape changes character dramatically between midday light and late afternoon, when the low sun draws out the full spectrum of colour from the formations. The valley is reached easily from San Pedro de Atacama, making it a natural complement to other Atacama highlights such as the Geyser del Tatio.
