Visit Punakha Dzong at the river confluence

Standing at the exact meeting point of the Po Chu and Mo Chu rivers, Punakha Dzong is the valley's centrepiece and one of the most architecturally impressive fortresses in Bhutan. Built in 1637 and translating to the 'Palace of Great Happiness', visitors can walk through its whitewashed courtyards, explore the complex, and look down from the walls to the two rivers spreading out below.

  • suspension bridge

Cross the suspension bridge over the Po Chu

  • Chimi Lhakhang

Walk the terraced fields to Chimi Lhakhang

The pleasant walk to the Temple of Fertility crosses terraced fields and passes through the village of Sopsokha, giving a clear picture of everyday rural life in the Punakha valley. The 15th-century temple on its hillock above the fields is a calm and unusual place, associated with the colourful figure of Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who is famously known as the "Divine Madman".

  • Punakha Tsechu festival

    Attend the Punakha Tsechu festival

On Undiscovered Destinations's February and March departures, the dzong's courtyard becomes the setting for the Punakha Tsechu, one of Bhutan's most significant religious festivals. Masked dancers perform centuries-old ritual dances before an audience of monks, locals, and a small number of visiting travellers.

  • Hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten

Hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten

A gentle hike from the suspension bridge below the chorten leads through the paddy fields of Yebisa village before climbing to this hilltop temple. Standing 30 metres tall, it is dedicated to Bhutan's fifth King. From the top, the sweeping views across the valley and surrounding villages reward the effort of the ascent.

About this place

The story behind Punakha, Bhutan

Punakha, Bhutan

Punakha in Bhutan is known for its warmer climate, fertile valley landscapes, and peaceful riverside setting. Surrounded by terraced rice fields and forested hills, the region offers a greener and more relaxed atmosphere than Bhutan’s higher mountain valleys.

The Punakha Valley

The Punakha Valley is formed by the meeting of the Po Chu and Mo Chu rivers, creating one of the most scenic and fertile areas in Bhutan. Traditional villages, rice paddies, and riverside farmland make the valley an important cultural and agricultural centre.

Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks, located at the confluence of the two rivers. Built in the 17th century, the fortress-monastery is admired for its whitewashed walls, golden roofs, and beautiful riverside setting. A nearby suspension bridge offers excellent views across the valley.

The Chimi Lhakhang and Wider Valley Highlights

Punakha is also home to important cultural sites including Chimi Lhakhang, known as the Temple of Fertility, and the hilltop Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten. Gentle walks through rice fields and traditional villages make these sites some of the valley’s most rewarding experiences.
