On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, complete immigration and customs formalities before meeting your private chauffeur-guide in the arrivals area. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Colombo.

The remainder of the day is free to relax after your international journey. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity to take a gentle stroll or simply settle into the hotel and enjoy your first impressions of Sri Lanka.

Colombo

Sri Lanka's commercial capital is a fascinating mixture of old and new. Colonial buildings, Buddhist and Hindu temples, bustling markets and modern developments reflect the many influences that have shaped the island over the centuries. Colombo is also a city of contrasts, where grand historic hotels and colonial districts stand alongside contemporary restaurants, galleries and shopping areas.

Your accommodation – Galle Face Hotel

The Galle Face Hotel is one of Colombo's great historic landmarks. Dating from the 19th century, this grand seafront hotel has hosted generations of travellers and retains much of the character associated with its long history. Its position overlooking the Indian Ocean makes it an atmospheric introduction to Sri Lanka, while the Sea View Rooms provide comfortable accommodation with views towards the coast.

After breakfast, set out with your guide to discover the contrasting faces of Colombo.

The city has developed over centuries as an important trading port, and its architecture and neighbourhoods reflect Portuguese, Dutch and British influences alongside Sri Lanka's own Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic traditions. Explore the historic districts, administrative quarters and cultural landmarks that reveal the city's fascinating past.

Return to the hotel during the afternoon for some time to relax.

In the evening, experience Colombo from a very different perspective with an informal street food experience.

Rather than a formal restaurant meal, this evening provides an opportunity to discover the flavours of Sri Lanka through its everyday food culture. Sample Tamil specialities such as dosai, vadai and appam, Muslim-influenced dishes including samosas and isso vadai, and the much-loved Sri Lankan speciality kottu roti.

The experience concludes with a cup of fragrant Ceylon tea. This is an informal and flexible experience, with your local hosts sharing stories about the dishes and the communities that have shaped Colombo's distinctive culinary traditions.

After breakfast, leave Colombo and travel north towards Wilpattu National Park.

Upon arrival, check in at Leopard Trails Wilpattu and enjoy lunch before settling into your surroundings.

The remainder of the afternoon is free to relax at camp and absorb the atmosphere of the wilderness.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park and is renowned for its extensive forests, open grasslands and numerous natural lakes, known locally as willus. Compared with some of Sri Lanka's more heavily visited parks, Wilpattu offers a quieter and more remote wildlife experience.

The park supports an impressive variety of wildlife, including Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, crocodiles and numerous species of birds. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but the park's relatively low visitor numbers and extensive wilderness give it a particularly authentic safari atmosphere.

Wilpattu is particularly noted for its leopard population, but encounters with elephants, sloth bears, deer, crocodiles and the park's abundant birdlife are also possible.

A safari here is about more than ticking off individual animals. The scale and tranquillity of Wilpattu provide an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka's wilderness away from the crowds.

Return to camp later in the afternoon to relax and enjoy dinner in your wilderness surroundings.

Leave Wilpattu after breakfast and travel towards the ancient city of Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka's most important archaeological and religious sites.

Anuradhapura was one of the great capitals of ancient Sri Lanka and became an important centre of Theravada Buddhism. Its vast archaeological landscape contains enormous stupas, ancient monasteries, reservoirs and sacred trees. Among its most revered sites is the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree associated with the Buddha's enlightenment. It is regarded as one of the oldest historically documented trees in the world and remains an important place of pilgrimage.

Continue to Habarana, where you check in to your boutique retreat surrounded by greenery and lakes.

Rise early for a visit to the extraordinary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of Sri Lanka's most recognisable landmarks. Rising dramatically above the surrounding plains, Sigiriya is a spectacular 5th-century citadel built by King Kashyapa. The ancient complex combines palace ruins, gardens, water features, frescoes and defensive structures. A climb of approximately 1,200 steps leads towards the summit, passing the famous Lion's Paws and the celebrated frescoes before reaching the remains of the royal palace and spectacular views across the surrounding countryside. Return to the hotel after your visit for breakfast and time to rest.

Continue to Ritigala, an atmospheric ancient monastic complex hidden within dense forest. Stone pathways, meditation platforms, reservoirs and ruined buildings provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the monks who once lived here. The peaceful setting is an important part of the experience, with the ruins gradually disappearing into the surrounding forest.

Return to Habarana after the visit.

Today offers an opportunity to see a very different side of Sri Lanka through a guided gentle cycling experience in the countryside around Habarana. Cycle along quiet rural roads and paths (approx. 12km total), passing fields and villages and meeting local people along the way. Visits to local homes provide an insight into traditional cottage industries, including brick-making, coir broom production, Ayurvedic oil preparation and traditional dance. Refreshments and local snacks are served along the route before the experience concludes with a home-cooked Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch prepared by a village host.

The emphasis is on genuine interaction rather than staged entertainment, making this a particularly rewarding cultural experience. Return to the hotel for a relaxed afternoon.

Travel south towards Kandy, stopping en route at the remarkable Dambulla Cave Temple, one of Sri Lanka's most important religious sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five natural caves contain an extraordinary collection of Buddhist statues and murals, many of which date back centuries. The temple complex occupies a rocky outcrop overlooking the surrounding countryside and offers both a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage and impressive views.

Continue to Kandy, where you check into another intimate Taru Villas property. Kandy was the final capital of the independent Sri Lankan kingdoms before the arrival of British rule. Surrounded by hills and centred around a tranquil lake, the city remains one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural and religious centres.

Leave Kandy and climb into the cool, misty highlands of central Sri Lanka. The landscape gradually changes from tropical vegetation to rolling hills covered with tea plantations, waterfalls and eucalyptus forests. Arrive in the Nanu Oya area and check into Langdale Boutique Hotel by Amaya, where the remainder of the day is free to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

The central highlands are synonymous with Ceylon tea. Introduced during the British colonial period, tea transformed the economy and landscape of the region, creating the distinctive patchwork of plantations that covers the hills today. The cooler climate is a welcome change after the heat of the lowlands, while the misty mountains and neatly cultivated tea estates provide some of the most beautiful scenery in Sri Lanka.

After breakfast, travel to Nanu Oya station to board the famous train journey through Sri Lanka's hill country towards Ella. The journey through the central highlands is one of Sri Lanka's classic travel experiences. The railway winds through tea plantations, forested valleys and mountain scenery, with bridges and tunnels providing constantly changing and absolutely superb views of the landscape.

On arrival in Ella, continue towards the south coast, stopping to visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge. Built during the British colonial period, the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most recognisable railway structures in Sri Lanka. Constructed from stone, brick and cement, its nine elegant arches span a deep green valley surrounded by tropical vegetation. Depending on conditions and your preference, walk to a viewpoint or descend closer to the bridge itself. If the timing is right, you may even see a train crossing this remarkable piece of railway heritage.

Continue to the south coast and check into your beachfront hotel.

Today, its ramparts, churches, former merchants' houses and narrow streets have been transformed into an appealing living district of cafés, galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Explore the fort on foot before returning to KK Beach for an afternoon at leisure.

Today is entirely at leisure. Relax beside the swimming pool, enjoy the beach or simply take time to unwind after the sightseeing and experiences of the previous two weeks. Your chauffeur and vehicle are available for journeys of up to 80 km should you wish to explore independently.

This is an opportunity to make the most of the Indian Ocean setting, perhaps with a swim, a walk along the beach or simply a leisurely lunch overlooking the sea. Enjoy a leisurely final morning before checking out. At the appropriate time, your chauffeur will transfer you to Bandaranaike International Airport for your late afternoon onward flight.
