01 Arrival in Tirana

On arrival at Tirana International Airport, you will be met and transferred privately to your centrally located four-star hotel, a journey of approximately 18 kilometres.

Once checked in, the remainder of the day is free to relax after your journey or begin discovering Albania's vibrant capital independently.

Depending on your arrival time, you might enjoy an easy walk around Skanderbeg Square, the impressive focal point of central Tirana, before continuing towards the New Bazaar, an atmospheric neighbourhood filled with cafés, restaurants and local shops.

Tirana has undergone considerable transformation in recent decades, combining historic buildings and Ottoman-era influences with remnants of its communist past and a lively contemporary café and restaurant culture.

02 TIRANA & MOUNT DAJTI

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Tirana on foot, discovering the city's historic centre and some of its most characteristic landmarks.

Your walking tour takes in Skanderbeg Square, named after Albania's national hero, as well as the elegant Et'hem Bey Mosque and the city's distinctive Clock Tower. Continue through some of Tirana's lively central streets towards the New Bazaar, an area where traditional market culture has been combined with cafés, restaurants and contemporary urban life.

You will also see the historic Tanners' Bridge, one of the city's surviving Ottoman-era monuments, before continuing through the colourful pedestrian areas around the centre.

Along the way, pause for a coffee at Komiteti Kafe Museum, a particularly atmospheric venue combining café culture with a collection of objects and memorabilia relating to Albania's recent past. It provides an informal and engaging introduction to the country's cultural heritage.

Later, travel to the lower station of the Dajti Ekspres cable car and ascend towards Mount Dajti, rising above Tirana. The cable-car journey provides increasingly expansive views across the capital and surrounding countryside. At the upper station, there will be time to enjoy the mountain environment, perhaps taking a gentle walk or relaxing over a coffee while appreciating the panoramic views.

The surrounding area forms part of the Dajti National Park, providing a welcome contrast to the energy of central Tirana. The cable car is weather dependent and normally closed on Tuesdays, so the timing of this excursion may be adjusted to suit the actual travel date and conditions.

Return to Tirana in the late afternoon and enjoy a free evening.

03 TIRANA – SHKODËR – LAKE SHKODRA – TIRANA

Today head north towards Shkodër, one of Albania's oldest and most characterful cities and an important centre of culture and history.

Your first visit is to Rozafa Castle, dramatically situated on a rocky hill above the meeting point of the Buna, Drin and Kiri rivers. The castle's strategic position has made it an important defensive site for centuries, while its elevated location provides spectacular views across the city, Lake Shkodra and the surrounding mountains.

Continue into the historic centre of Shkodër, where you can explore the pedestrian streets and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this northern Albanian city. There will be time to pause at one of the local cafés and appreciate the city's distinctive character.

On the return journey to Tirana, travel along the shores of Lake Shkodra, stopping at the lakeside settlements of Shirokë and Zogaj.

These quieter communities offer a completely different atmosphere, with views across the lake towards the mountains and traditional restaurants overlooking the water. Depending on the weather and available daylight, there may be time for a coffee or gentle walk beside the lake.

Continue to Tirana for the evening.

04 TIRANA – KRUJA – DURRËS – TIRANA

After breakfast, travel to the historic mountain town of Kruja, one of Albania's most important national and historical centres. Kruja is closely associated with Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's celebrated national hero, who led resistance against the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century.

Explore the atmospheric Old Bazaar, where traditional buildings house shops selling local handicrafts, textiles and souvenirs. The steep, cobbled streets lead towards Kruja Castle, dramatically positioned above the surrounding plains. Take time to explore the castle area and appreciate the sweeping views across the landscape. The setting provides an excellent opportunity to understand Kruja's strategic importance and its enduring place in Albanian national identity.

From Kruja, continue towards the Adriatic coast and the historic city of Durrës. One of Albania's oldest urban centres, Durrës has been an important port and trading settlement for centuries. Explore the historic centre and visit the impressive Roman Amphitheatre, a reminder of the city's importance during the Roman period. There will also be time to experience the atmosphere of this coastal city before returning to Tirana.

05 TIRANA – BERAT (UNESCO) – ELBASAN – TIRANA

Today travel south towards Berat, one of Albania's most beautiful and historically significant towns.

The journey may include a scenic stop around the Belsh area, a landscape of rolling hills, farmland and small lakes that provides a particularly attractive introduction to central Albania.

Continue to Berat, famously known as the 'City of a Thousand Windows' because of the distinctive Ottoman houses climbing the hillsides above the Osum River.

Berat's historic centre is UNESCO World Heritage listed, and the town is one of the finest places in Albania to experience the country's Ottoman architectural heritage.

Explore the atmospheric neighbourhoods of Mangalemi and Gorica, with their traditional white houses, narrow streets and views across the river.

Continue uphill to Berat Castle, a remarkable fortified historic quarter where local residents still live among the ancient buildings and churches. The castle offers wonderful views across Berat and the surrounding countryside.

Inside the castle, visit the Onufri Museum, dedicated to the country's important tradition of religious iconography and named after the celebrated 16th-century Albanian painter Onufri.

To make the experience more personal, visit a traditional house within the castle, where you can learn more about family life and local customs while enjoying a tasting of homemade products, raki, dessert and Turkish coffee.

On the return journey to Tirana, make a short stop in Elbasan, an ancient city positioned along the historic route of the Via Egnatia. Take a short walk through the remains of the old castle and historic quarter, where narrow streets and traditional buildings reveal the layers of different cultural and religious influences that have shaped the city over the centuries.
