Mongolia – Naadam Festival

Ask travellers why they want to visit Mongolia and often you will be told that it is to experience the world famous Naadam Festival which takes place every July. Indeed, it is an incredible festival and an excellent time to visit the country. But rather than enjoying Naadam in Ulaan Baatar, which can be overcrowded and touristy, we will travel instead to the countryside where the real flavour of this epic event can be experienced and enjoyed with the local people. The Naadam is one of several ancient festivals that define Mongolian culture and draw travellers from around the world. On this tour we will visit the cultural city of Ulaan Baatar before travelling south to the Gobi. Head to the Khongor sand dunes, the tallest dunes in Mongolia before discovering the flaming cliffs of Bayanzag, where dinosaur eggs were found in 1922 by Roy Chapman Andrews. Make our way north to the Ongi Monastery before heading to the town of Arvaikheer located on the northern edge of the Gobi Desert. Here you will experience an authentic Naadam Festival, away from the crowds. Finally, your adventure ends with a visit to Hustai National Park which is home to the only truly wild horses on earth, the Takhi horse.

Key experiences at Gobi Desert Tours

  • Ride a camel - Khongor Sand Dunes

Ride a camel across the Khongor Sand Dunes

The Khongor dunes are the tallest in Mongolia, with ridges reaching 300 metres. A camel trek takes you out to the base and along the soft ridgelines, with the flat desert floor stretching to an unbroken horizon. On a windy day the sand produces a sound like a plane engine that gives these dunes their local name.

  • Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs at sunset

Stand at the Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs at sunset

The eroding red sandstone of Bayanzag glows deep amber in the final light of day, the same ground where Velociraptor and Protoceratops fossils were discovered in 1922 by Roy Chapman Andrews. Walking along the cliff edge at dusk, with fossil-rich desert below and the vast Gobi stretching to the horizon, is a defining experience of any Mongolia itinerary.

  • Yolyn Am gorge

    Walk into Yolyn Am gorge

Yolyn Am is a narrow slot canyon where 200-metre walls block out the sun long enough to keep ice on the gorge floor into late summer. It is named after the lammergeier, a large bearded vulture found in the mountains of Central Asia, and sightings are possible for those who look up.

  • ger camp under desert skies

Sleep in a ger camp under desert skies

The Gobi has no artificial light for hundreds of kilometres, and the best ger camps sit within sight of dune or cliff country. The traditional Mongolian ger is warm at night and well ventilated in heat. Waking at dawn in the desert, stove lit and breakfast on the way, is a genuinely different experience from any other kind of travel.

About this place

The story behind Gobi Desert Tours

Gobi Desert Tours

Gobi Desert tours take in one of the world's most geologically varied deserts, covering southern Mongolia across roughly 1.3 million km². Despite its reputation, only around 5% of the Gobi is sand dune. The rest is gravel plain, eroded escarpment and dry valley, each section holding its own landscapes and wildlife. It is a cold desert, sitting mostly between 900 and 1,500 metres, with temperatures that swing from –40°C in winter to +45°C in summer.

The Key Sites

The majority of the Gobi's iconic sites sit within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in Ömnögovi Province. Bayanzag, known worldwide as the Flaming Cliffs, is where American palaeontologist Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first scientifically recorded dinosaur eggs in the 1920s, along with Velociraptor and Protoceratops fossils. The red sandstone erodes to produce the amber glow at sunset that gives the site its name. The Khongor Sand Dunes stretch for more than 180 km with the tallest ridges reaching 300 metres; on windy days the sand produces a sound like a plane engine that earns them the local name Singing Dunes.

Yolyn Am gorge cuts deep into the Gurvansaikhan Mountains, its narrow walls rising to 200 metres and blocking enough sunlight to keep ice on the gorge floor well into summer. Moltsog Els, a smaller but well-shaped dune system, is also visited on several small group guided tours and is particularly good for camel riding and photography.
